Africa campaign
I see on eBay a kaki colored P08 holster (canvas). I realize this is not an actual German holster. Did the Germans have other holster to go with the kaki colored uniforms and equipment (guns tanks etc.) used in Africa, other then the black holsters?

I think the only way to determine that is to examine archival period movie footage...Like Raiders Of The Lost Ark... :D

No..The leather holster was employed throughout the Africa campaign. The only genuine canvas holster period photo I have ever seen with a canvas Luger holster was from WW1. Likewise a canvas holster..I have only seen one I thought was genuine and it was a WW1 type.
Raiders Of The Lost Ark..A really GREAT movie! Not sure how accurate all the gear was...haven't seen it in a decade. |
Not looking for a canvas holster, just wondering if the Germans used the black holster with their kaki uniforms. Just does not seem like something the Germans would do.

Just does not seem like something the Germans would do. They tried the concept in a number of efforts but tradition dies hard. They pretty much stuck with leather as long as it was available. Paper was a fallback material before and after canvas. But as far as I know in the Africa campaign the Germans had a lot more to worry about than the black on khaki problem. Supply in general. They did use a canvas belt pretty extensively there though. Another thought..I suspect it may have been difficult to change holster material type manufacture all of a sudden. Look at the trouble with winter clothing they had in Russia.

This artillery canvas holster was in my collection; I sold it a few years ago. There was a regiment marking.

Sorry for the late response, have been in a move, so stuff was in two locations.
Here are some photos from North-Africa, you can see the normal holsters used. You can see that the uniforms were not that regulated under those conditions as well :) |
Oh my goodness, one sock and an Italian helmet! They must have been shocked back at OKW.
