Broken or worn parts?

New member, first post, please bear with me. Just got a shooter grade Luger with some problems. First, I can operate or c0ck the toggle even when the weapon is on Safe. None of my others do that. Second, then when I pull the trigger I do not hear the "click" of the hammer fall, yet if it is loaded the weapon will fire. Again, when I dry fire others, not that I do that often, I hear the click of the hammer drop. Any comments on what might be my issues? Thanks, Dave.

Dave,
If I understand you correctly, you should be able to operate the toggle with the safety on, if the Luger has a relieved sear bar.
The "click" is more problematic. I suggest that you first thoroughly clean the workings of the gun and especially make sure that the plunger on the sear bar operates freely. Then reassemble and try again. If it is not the plunger it could be that the trigger lever needs some fitting, especially if the side plate is mismatched.

I just re-read your post and noted that there is no dry fire click but now see that the gun fires OK. This makes me think more strongly that it is a sticky sear bar plunger and that the shock of firing makes it work but it sticks when dry firing.

Welcome and congrats on your shooter.

First you have a striker, not a hammer; that said you should not be able to set the striker to fire with the safety on. The sear bar has to be able to move out to allow the striker to catch on the sear bar.

The relieved safety allows the pistol to be unloaded with an already set(since we can't type c....ked)striker.

The fact that you can't hear the striker fall may be a function of dirty, gummy parts, weak spring, or poor hearing.

A good strip, clean, and lube is in order to start.

Thanks to all replies! Gave the plunger and firing pin assemblies, and my ears!, a good cleaning and lube. I can now hear the "click" when I drop the striker. Apparently just gummy. However, still have the problem of being able to work the toggle whether the gun is on Safe or on Fire and whether the striker is set or has been dropped (fired). As I said, my other Lugers don't do this. Seems something is worn or broken or possibly dirty in this one. Any more ideas of a part or area to look at?

I believe that Don explained it well earlier. Some Lugers have a relieved safety which allows these functions with the safety on. Not all Lugers have this feature.

Compare the sear bar and striker to the parts on your other Lugers. Look for unusual wear.

Dave,
Disconnect the recoil spring hook from the toggle, reassemble, and operate the toggle. It should be smooth and free. If it is not then look for the problem, such as a bent frame rail.
