Any Suggestions On Protecting Our Guns
 

There is no doubt flooding on its way for some of us! How best to protect our collection assuming there is indoor flooding~~ Eric

It would be trite to say take them and leave, but more constructively:

I keep my pistols in silicone impregnated gun socks, which help ward off humidity. They won't help much if things get soaked, but they have helped collections through fires where water was used to extinguish the flames.

I keep a dehumidifier running in my gun safe room, and a goldenrod inside the safe.

If there is any chance for salt water exposure, you do need to get them out of there.

Obvious advice, but if your safe(s) is/are in a "flood zone", take the stuff out and store higher!

If you are leaving, take it with you.

Should flooding happen regularly or often, relocate to a higher floor or put legs under the safe; or move!

The worst is the humidity and heat! I would put my leather in multible plastic trash bags! In Florida we have the a/c on all the time and 2 generators just in case! I have no idea how anything survived the trenches!

I live, for the time being, in Ca. ....water is only available in 20oz bottles, just don't spill any on your guns and you should be OK.......but I do miss long hot showers

Maybe instead of a gas line we pipe you all the water you need!

I've lived in, and loved the desert all life, but I am ready for a green lawn again......not sure of the snow of my new home in S. Dakota......how do you find your fired brass when out shooting?

You find it when you mow the yard in the spring, normally when they fly through a window. :o

As for the storage question: I would look into those waterproof storage containers they sell on the "prepper/survivalist" web sites. Some of them are made to be buried in the ground, so they should hold up well to any water related situation. Just need to make sure they are secured somehow, it would be a real downer if your collection got washed out in the ocean. :eek:

Pistols are easy. Only a small dry space is needed.

Some people collect those big machine guns, and have a few hundred rifles in home. Those will be hard to move around, if flooding.

If you are considering below ground, use a casket!

I've never considered a flooding, as so far (touch wood) the area where I live is not likely that it'll ever get flooded.
Anyway I keep most of my guns in a biggish safe in my "bunker", that's what my wife calls our cellar sort of thing from where I'm writing now; well, if you've ever seen the film "Meet the Parents" my "bunker" is a bit like Jack's cellar, and the funny thing is that I have a cat too (no he's not called Jinx, is a female cat called "SOFIA")

If you don't have a second floor or attic, put them on top of and on the upper shelves of your refrigerator.

Years ago a cold water hose to the washer broke flooding our entire home. My lugers and leather were still packed in the Rubbermade blue containers. Saved them all and is great for my leather holster storage~

Well, first don't always buy the weatherman's hype! I'm 10 miles north of Columbia SC, and by this time we were supposed to be enduring "catastrophic" rainfall and a Biblical level of flooding not seen in 200 years......my driveway is barely wet.....uh huh.
