BYF/41 Grip help
 

Hello Gents,

I'm a P.38 collector and a member of the forum over there. But, I could not pass up a good deal recently on a BYF 41 Luger #5560. Double 655 acceptance stamps, and LTP. "y" on frame. It's my first Luger. The gun is decent all matching down to the firing pin. It came with Black grips that rattle slightly. The gun was pretty dirty, cleaned it up. The grips had little card stock shims under it to help with them not fitting correctly. It looks like the Bakelite plastic around the screws has chipped out some, creating the problem. I'm going to assume this is somewhat a normal occurrence? Grips look original.

My question is; what is the best coarse of action regarding the grips? try to shim them again, or look for original replacements?

Any help is greatly appreciated, and any info on the make model would be extra appreciated.

I use little black "O" rings. They solve the problem and are not noticeable.

Others will give more pointers.

Another little trick I use for jiggly grips is to build up clear epoxy in the worn off/deficient areas such as under your grip screws. If you use epoxy with a long curing time, there's plenty of opportunity to push it around or remove any excess while it is fudgy (not sticky). It can also be applied to the ends of the panels in the case that they are too short. Up to a point this last remedy won't be visible once they're installed--perhaps a slight increase in the hairline between grip and frame. After curing, they can be fitted with filing/sanding to precise shape/dimension.
