Does the lanolin soften the leather??? I have a black (they're the stiffest) :rolleyes: DeSantis holster that was soaked in concrete, I think... :(

It does and it doesn't. It will only soften the smooth skin on the outside because it is not meant to penetrate beyond into the inner leather fibers.

If you have a rock hard holster nothing will touch, you might want to try Neatsfoot oil. It's a penetrant and might unlock the fibers. Don't use it on a nice collectable holster. It's an OIL and will go through and through. Ruining a nice holster.

Fear is a disabler. Lanolin is used in many hand creams. Dry chapped hands..dry chapped leather. If the surface is expected to flex..if it is too dry it WILL crack, first on the surface. Better a little prevention. Storage is the key. Holsters only arrive many decades later in this condition because..luckily they had good storage.

Humidity is a key factor. Attics with extreme heat are not good. Damp basements aren't good. Air conditioning and temperature of 67 to 71 should be very good with humidity of say 30 -35 %. And keep the weapon out and try to keep the belt loops from being squashed flat.
These steps should keep you in good shape.
Others may tweak these suggestions.
