I have forgotten how to date a luger...Just picked a average condition one... Serial number 1948 with what looks like an L below ...Has 1916 on top....It is full of cosmoline ....All matching...

1916. Exact month and day is unknown. Collectors divide total volume of the year, divided by 12 to estimate production month. Not accurate of course. Production was not linear.

Sorry, this collector makes no such estimation.

Every year (generally) they started over, so whatever your suffix is, is approx when it was made....

The reason I ask the last question, I have a couple of other Lugers....Also I have a friend with a couple, like to date them also.... His Dad jumped on D Day with the 82nd and made it clear through to Germany....He had them, but like a lot of others did nothing with them....

Each luger is different, so markings on the right or left, dates on top of receiver, etc.

See the 'how to ID' in the New Collector area and then you can name off each luger and its markings

I will do that as soon as I can get ahold of him lugers....I do know that one of his have parts from two different pistols....The lower is all matching from one and the upper is from another pistol, all matching...His Father took it from a German Officer, that did not need it anymore, near the "Eagles Nest"....
Is there a book on Lugers that is recommender??? I have "The Luger Book By John Walter" which I don't like...
