Eight Luger Makers
 

Here are pictures of my Luger collection that represent the eight manufacturers of these pistols. In sequential order from left to right: DWM, Erfurt, Spandau, Bern Waffenfabrik, Vickers, Simson, Krieghoff and Mauser.

I am pleased with my Luger makers collection even though there are issues regarding legitimate manufactures. I know that Vickers assembled pistols made with components manufactured by DWM. And yes, the Spandau is probably a fake, but how many real Spandau Lugers exist?

None.

Hi Dick, Thanks for showing your complete set of Lugers by manufacturer. While the Spandau is certainly a fake, I think it's worth including, if only to commemorate the Golden Age of Luger fakery.

Dick, if i were a mechanic I would copy one of the few pictures of a known 'real' Spandau, with the appropriate ancillary markings...

Even in the early Datig book there was the question regarding the issue surrounding the Spandau Luger. Contemporary authors are apparently concerned about the Spandau pictures in their publications with their beware notes.

The issue question is expanded by the fact that no Spandau Lugers are reported from Europe.

Doug Smith told me years ago that he was asked to go through the shop of a deceased Luger enthusiast in southern Ohio. He said he found a roll die for a Spandau and a Chrysanthemum.

Dick, thanks for posting. I think this grouping is a hoot! It reminds me of this oft'-repeated conversation: "So, what kind of Luger are you really interested in?" "One of each" "OK, but in what category? Imperial? Wiemar? WWII?" Yes, that's right. All of them!"

* Thank you sincerely for sharing this fine collection of Luger Makers. Rarely does one see all 8 exhibited together at one time....especially in such nice condition. A tribute to your informed dedication.
* No chamber date; so, is the DWM a 1st issue Military or a 5 digit commercial?
*And the $64 dollar question is: What goes in the empty slot next to the 4" DWM.
* Inquiring mind seeks to know.

I took these pictures quite some time ago, but I believe the DWM is a 1st issue German P08. The display stand has 10 slots so there is an empty slot on each side.

Never mind the Spandau, in fact I've never seen one, but let me thank you for sharing a picture of your fine collection, acually makes me feel like doing the same with my (small indeed) colletion.

Dick et al, What most folks don't realize that all of these makers were produced on only 3 original sets of machinery: DWM machinery went to Mauser in the early 1930s. Erfurt's to Simson in the early 1920s and to Kreighoff by 1935, and probably use postwar by the DDR. The Swiss machinery was modified in 1929 and continued to make parts until 1949 and then sold to Mauser in the late 1960, but soon had to be replaced. TH

Sorry but my memory is slipping. The DWM is an early BUG marked commercial model 1908. The Mother of Lugers.

maybe a stainless steel luger from aimco to fill one empty slot?
