A friend of mine here in Idaho is wanting me to sell his dad's WW2 Luger bring back from WW2, I sold a G43 for him this summer that his dad also brought back. I'm doing this for no payment he and his wife are good friends of ours and are having some financial problems. I would just really like a little more information about the pistol and opinions on condition from the pictures and I'll try to honestly describe it. I'll start with the bad, his dad carved diamonds on the originals grips and the screws were some how lost. The magazine is non matching the SN but is marked 122, a Waffen stamp over 37 and a 'y' on the aluminum bottom. I've taken it apart completely and all parts including small ones all have the last two numbers of the serial number on them. The finish appears to be pretty good no rust with maybe 75% remaining. The pistol functions very smooth and bore and rifling look great. Thank for your opinions and information about the pistol.

What part of Idaho are you in. I am in south eastern near Idaho Falls. More pictures from the top, sides, etc. would be helpful. From just the initial look, $1000 to &1200 range would be my first estimate. Does it have a holster?

Dave! You must be in the Christmas spirit and feeling generous! The grips being carved kick this pistol in the head. They should be numbered to the pistol. Now, the grips are a major missing numbered piece. Cause I don't see how they can be fixed? 75% finish..we are approaching shooter status on this otherwise collectable Mauser. The grips are truly sad..I have been offered a dozen Luger's here in AZ in the last month. All of them with a major problem, some a lot of problems. Trouble is..getting top dollar for a problem shooter is $7-900. Luger's with no problems start at about $1-1200 and go up pretty quickly. A lot depends on how you sell the pistol. I guess I could see you achieving $1,000 from a board member wanting an all matching shooter. Maybe. Any higher IMO is going to be like my first girlfriend, hard to get. Do you have a local auction house? I have seen prices skyrocket here at a local auction. People, for some reason go crazy bidding on guns at small auctions. Especially Luger's. It's a noble cause..Good Luck!

The owner of this Luger assured me that the grips had never been replaced and his dad did carve the diamonds on them and he also hacked a very nice G43 stock which drastically lowered the value on it. These grips have no serial numbers stamped inside just a letter 'V' about a quarter inch high on just one grip.

You know Jerry, somehow I completely over looked and did not even pay attention to the grips. I just zeroed in on the gun. I stand corrected. Other than the grips, a nice looking standard luger.

Jerry - here is how you fix it - 1936 Luger grips should be unnumbered!

If you find another set of grips without numbers, they can be changed out so you can sell this gun for a decent price. Grips come up for sale on ebay and gunbroker all the time.
You can also buy some screws for it - they shouldn't cost much - ask Lugerdoc (Tom Heller) if he has any.

noworky - Are you sure about the 75% - I don't see it in the two pictures you posted, but I know that only shows part of the gun. If you could post pictures of both sides, the top, the underside (especially the barrel serial num), and the front & back of the grip straps, you will get a more accurate estimate of the finish and value.

Geo, 1936 Luger grips should be unnumbered! Thanks..So no numbers and no WaA no nothing? I should bone up on Mausers...Yes, That would be a good fix. I think the pistol rates better than 75% too from what I see. A pic of the gripstraps are usually a good indicator.

You are both right. Some 1936 Mausers had serialed numbered grips. Bill

Also check to be certain that the grip screw threads are good in the frame. There may be a reason for the missing grip screws.

If the grip screw threads aren't too bad (and we don't know that they are damaged) they can be recovered.Just a simple hand tool or two.

Well it's been very educational to me and Dave S. came by the gun shop where I work and inspected the 1936 in question found another part replacement the round pin about a quarter inch in diameter that goes through the toggle is not serialized, nice kind of bluing on the ends but no number 83. The Luger did sell today the way it stands to a friend for $900 and he knows the problems. I also looked at the grip screw threads with a loop and they appeared fine. Thanks for all of your opinions and lesson for me. Another thing I might add is several people that looked at it today said they would have rated the finish a strong 80% and Dave brought to my attention the parts that all had nice strawing.
