Recently Acquired Luger
 

Hey everyone, new to the forum.

I recently inherited a Luger from my family. Below you will find all the photos I have of it. All I know is that my great uncle took it home from the Second World War. Otherwise I'm hoping you guys can let me know the details about it and if it’s worth anything. I don't intend on selling it, I would just like to know what I have.

Hi Matt, and welcome to the forum.

Your Luger was manufactured by Mauser in Oberndorf in 1938. It looks to be in it's original finish and hopefully is all matching. If that's true, it's considered collectible, and you should resist the urge to shoot it (since a broken part would impact it's historic and financial value).

it's a nice one. Do you have an original - perhaps matching - magazine? Do you have the "bring back papers" that your uncle might have had to allow him to return to the USA with it?

I'm actually Canadian and as far as I know there isn't any paperwork associated with bringing it back. However it is registered so it's a legal weapon. I attached the photo of the magazine. The weapon isn't currently in my possession (although I do own it) so I can't get any other photos. Also as far as I know all the parts are matching, although I may be wrong. Any idea what it may be worth? I really don't think it was reblued, however I can't be completely sure.

Edit: there is a second magazine but I don't have a photo of it.

Interesting. How did you get around the 4" barrel prohibition??? Is there some sort of 'grandfather' clause in Canada??? :)

This particular magazine does not match the gun but the other magazine may. Does the pistol include a holster and takedown tool?

Here in the US a matching 1938 Mauser in this condition with two WW2 magazines would ballpark around $1,800, give or take. The Canadian market is a completely different ballgame so perhaps some of our Canadian members could weigh in.

To be honest I'm not really sure. I would bet it was actually misclassified when it was initially registered. All my research says it should be prohibited but it is classified as restricted. Alternatively there may be some sort of grandfather clause. I think in this case its one of those "don't ask questions you don't want to know the answer to" type situations.

No it doesn't include either unfortunately.

I think you may be one of the only persons in Canada to own a fully functioning 4" barreled Luger. Enjoy it (I won't tell if you don't)!

I think that is just a stupid law - how is a 4-1/8" barrel gun safer or less concealable than a 4" barrel? And have you ever tried to conceal a Luger? - they're huge.

Sometimes I think of moving to Canada if things get too bad here for gun owners, but then I remember what would I do with my Luger collection? I guess you can still collect Artillery and the longer barrel commercial Lugers, right?

One of our Canadian members here [aka "lugercollector"] actually manufactures longer-than-four-inch barrels for Lugers in your country, nice looking ones too. I think his company web page is in his member profile. :)

I actually prefer the 4 3/4" Finnish Luger barrels and 'square' front sight blades. Ed Tinker has a pic of a 6" Navy Luger in one of his albums; it looks really balanced, unlike the 4" barrel (to me, anyway). :rolleyes:

There is a grandfather clause, you could get 12.7 if you inherit a pre 1945 12.6 firearm. This only applies if your direct relative has 12.6.

That don't ask could get you 3 years mandatory minimum and a lifetime firearm ban. If it was me I would be asking :)
