Too bad no one has recreated one, that would be an interesting rifle to shoot.

I guess the major problem of the design being it's too open -- the whole action is exposed outside. For pistol, that's OK, pistols sit in holsters most of time, well protected from sand and dirt. For rifles, that must be a major issue.

The tumblr site has a different opinion -- It is probable that the cost of the rifle’s production was a major prohibiting factor preventing it from being produced in larger numbers

I doubt the cost being a major concern. German could dump big money to build up a navy that was almost not used... how much was a battleship...

That toggle opening just in front of your aiming eye must have been a tad scary or even problematic if you're wearing a military helmet. Maybe that's the main reason why that project didn't come through.
