jme 1942 Holster
 

Recentlly picked up an extremely nice Spreewerke P.38 and it was in this holster along with an extra P.38 mag. Strangely it almost seemed as though it was made for the P.38 as it fit perfectly, as did the spare mag. Anyway it also includes an unmarked loading tool. The vet that brought it back from WWII has passed on and this rig was found while his nephew was going through his things. The nephew advises that as far as he knows everything has been together since his uncle brought it back. Any information as far as rarity or value would be greatly appreciated. I'm also curious about the number stamped into the front of the holster.

It's in really nice condition for it's age and seems it was well taken care of.

Your holster was made by: Armeemarinehaus,Inhaber Deutscher Offizier Verein, Berlin-Charlottenburg. Nice looking holster, My estimate $400. The number might be a police issue number?? Bill

I concur with Bill's evaluation and estimate. Looks like a nice holster and tool.

These are not particularly rare, but they are in demand, particularly in excellent condition.

Bill is spot on. Don't put a P38 mag in the pouch, they are too wide and will put a bulge in the pouch ruining it for some collector's.

I've kept an open mind on these.
I've a pigskin 42 that appears only to have housed a P38, whether by design or matched post war who can say. The mag pouch accommodates a P38 Mag snugly.

Curious that your pigskin holster's spare magazine pouch does not have the cutouts to accommodate the Luger magazine's base plug knobs. I know some late-post war holsters were designed to accommodate either pistol.

If you look closely, the mag pouch has been modified.

Ken's right - we just don't know when the modification happened.
The altered edging is a very similar finish to the original edging of rest of the holster and hasn't been left 'in the rough'.

The mag pouch is original to the holster, it has just been cut down about 1/2" on the outside surface, eliminating the second knob relief. The raw edge was then re stained.

If a P-38 mag is inserted in a regular length Luger pouch, it is too short and too wide. This usually results in an unsightly bulge at the lower end of the pouch. In this case the mag pouch has been made shorter so the bulge is still there but runs the full length of the pouch.
