It's interesting that Sturgess & Gortz comment on a Dutch 'cartridge counter' Luger using a modified right grip which allowed observation of the loading button of an un-altered magazine. Sadly, no pics. :(

Looks like it would be easy to do. Wood only. Might be kinda fragile though...Hmmmm... :)

I wonder whats more rare the mag or the gun!! My mistake its a 1904 sorry!

You could cut the channel in the wood and have a thin, steel or aluminum reenforcing plate with the same cut surrounding it on the inside of the grip.

I imagine the introduction of dirt and grime is an issue, unless you had a transparent "window" in it.
