Hogan = Robert Edward "Bob" Crane (July 13, 1928 – June 29, 1978) was murdered in Scottsdale AZ. He was an early pioneer of porn and had an impressive setup of home video recording equipment. The suspicions are that his partner in this enterprise knocked him off.
Newhart = Richard Dawson (Not to be confused with Richard Dawkins!) (born Colin Lionel Emm; November 20, 1932 – June 2, 2012)--otherwise he'd still be schmoozing on Family Feud!

Thanks for your findings.

That makes me realize that here in Italy we've never had any series/tv program that somehow "humoured" that period.

For example Wehrmacht soldiers here are still being shown/considered as unconfortable allies or more often like brutal invaders, as in fact they were.

We say that: "Italians admire the Germans but do not love them, while the Germans love Italy but they don't have a high consideration of the Italians" (...sometimes they are quite right though).

It gets stranger. Virtually every actor who played a nazi on the series was jewish. Some, like John Banner and Werner Klemperer, escaped Europe along with their families as the nazis rose to power. Howard Caine, who played Major Hochstetter throughout the series, (while inexplicably wearing an SS Colonel's uniform the entire time) was a very kind and gentle man. He ad libed the original "WHO IS THIS MAN?!?!" line and it was so well received it became a staple. They belonged to a generation who had lived WW2 and were learning to cope with it. The series could never be made today, thanks to PC Liberals.
Robert Clary actually spent time in a nazi concentration camp, (this is why you occasionally hear the character speak pretty good German). Richard Dawson signed on expecting to have the lead role in the series, a fact that caused tention with Bob Crane throughout the series. There are many back stories to this series. I still enjoy watching it.

Another strange fact is that Leon Askin, who played General Burkhalter, (and who was also arrested and interned by the nazis), and who you would have expected to die before most of the cast, in fact outlived many of them, passing away in 2005 at 97. His family also escaped Europe and Askin served in the US Air Corps in WW2 as an information specialist!

Speaking of HH characters, I caught an old episode of The Man From Uncle a couple of nights ago, (The Project Strigas Affair, aired November, 1964) and was shocked to see Werner Klemperer as the bad East Block Embassador, Leonard Nimoy as his sidekick and William Shatner as a chemist helping UNCLE!!

Amazing that just a few years later they all became TV icons! One wonders if this is where Nimoy and Shatner met, to later go on to TV immortality as the Star Trek crew.

Barbara Feldon's parents, the Halls, lived down the street from me in Northern New Jersey. The neighborhood kids would always get into a tizzy whenever she visited. She would sometimes come out and talk to us.

Hogan's Heroes was also a great showcase for some of the best character actors around: Noam Pitlik, (who was in the B&W HH pilot), Frank Marth, Henry Corden, Ruta Lee, Parley Bear, (Mayor of Mayberry), Arlene Martel, (Spock's Vulcan wife and Tiger on the HH series), Gavin Mcleod, (the Love Boat Captain and McHales Navy and Kelly's Heroes star after losing much weight).
William Christopher, (Father Mulcahey on MASH) also substituted on many episodes as one of the heroes when one of the cast was absent.

The set in Culver City, California, known informally as the "40 Acres", was also used for Gone with the Wind, (Tara), The Andy Griffith Show, Gomer Pyle, USMC, Superman and countless other movies and TV shows. The set no longer exists and is buried under an industrial park today.

BTW, there really WAS a Stalag 13 outside the Town of Hammelburg in Bavaria. It still exits today as a modern military base. This is the stalag Patton ordered a raid on to free his son-in-law. A rescue which turned into a disaster for the rescuers.
