S/42 toggle - diff numbers
 

here is something interesting

I bought a 1940 upper, it had this S/42toggle, totally different numbers on it, last two and first two.

The entire toggle is number 59

the firing pin is 84

look what is marked on the rear of the breachblock... an 84

So, what in the world?

I'm hardly an expert, but couldn't this simply be as mundane as an example of parts substitution/replacement by an armorer-or an example of when several/multiple guns are simultaneously disassembled, the parts being scrambled upon re-assembly?

I think the point being made is why would a part within a matching set of parts also have the same number as a mismatched part within the assembly. (I.e. the additional number 84 on the breech block, the same as the mismatched firing pin).

The logical explanation is that the firing pin # 84 was fitted to the # 59 breech block and subsequntly marked with firing pin number to know that the firing pin is no longer a mismatch.

Not all firing pins are a drop in in the breech block and some fitting may be required to avoid future problems (learnt this the hard way).

I would tend to agree, although I have never seen an assembly so marked before.

Neither have I, but it appears reasonable.

The number on the rear of a commercial BB is an inspector's mark and just a coincidence that it is the same as the FP. The serial on the side (#59) matches the rest of the toggle parts except the extractor, which appears to be something other than 59. TH

Tom, I thought of that, but I don't remember seeing numbers like this - of course, it could not be a coincidence and a previous owner did it on purpose...
