A Comparable Firearm~

Was there a U.S. handgun that was comparable to the German luger?? If so which was over all better and preferred? What were their main differences? Are they just as collectable?~~Eric

I'll bite.
1911, 1911A1. Yes, yes, they worked, and yes.

The major difference between the luger and the M1911, other than reliability (Colt wins that one), was the caliber. The 9mm had greater penetration, such as thru a GI helmet or a barricaded target, and probably caused more wounded, rather than killed GIs, that had to be cared for. It appears that the US military has accepted the premis that it's better to wound and tie up 3 people, rather than just killing one outright, plus lighter ammo and higher mag capacity. TH
