Vickers Luger
 

Hello all,

So, here's the Vickers Luger I picked up from Checkpoint Charlie's. I cleaned off some light rust under the grips (which are numbered to the gun). The gun is numbered as 4524 and the only thing without the matching numbers is the unnumbered barrel (6" barrel).

The brass plate has M.L. M. I. 173 etched onto it.

There looks to be a smallish hole in the front of the grip and yet that had no serious rust on the inside or outside. Very odd and not sure what could have caused it.

I've been trying to track down an affordable copy of the Dutch Lugers book but no dice right now, alas. I'll see if I can get a copy through Interlibrary Loan. The magazine is wooden bottomed, with a repaired bit (left side). 1309 b, I think.

I for one am interested to hear if there were longer barreled Vickers luger made. If it were an original, it wouldnt have the arsenal repair date on the barrel but it should have proofs right?

Is your mag numbered?

It is, but it's WWI German, I think. Numbered 1309 b. The only mismatched parts are the barrel and the magazine. There are no proofs on the barrel either so it could be some sort of post-Dutch rebarrel?

I'm certainly no expert, but it sounds like someone rebarreled stateside long after leaving Indonesia. The vickers Lugers are generally rough, so a great find all in all.

How much did you pay for it, if you don't mind my asking?
I try to follow up on the vickers as much as possible. The last one on GB was $2750, Simpson has had one for a while at $4000, and there was one on Julia I've been meaning to find out about:

Not a problem at all. I paid $1495 for it and I don't feel like I am out any money. I saw the one on Simpson's site ($4,000 is a bit too rich for me)

I have to admit that the 6" barrel has really grown on me and I plan to take her to the range next Sunday. It's in decent condition aside from the damage on the front grip strap.

thats a bargain for a Vickers!

I have one and would like to get another example with the brass plate but haven't seen another in a price range that I can afford.

oh and I just signed up for the Julia site to see the final sale price of that pristine one....

Wow, bloody hell. It was beautiful but I hadn't realised they got that much. I think I'm going to be glad about the one I have! :)

That one is a little out of the ordinary. Supposedly it was one of a small group of low serial numbered Vickers produced for a special, but unknown, reason. If it was in the approx. 5XXX serial number range in that condition I doubt that it would have brought more than $7500-8000...but who knows, it is a very nice example so perhaps the value could be due to the condition.

The one on the Julia site has no markings on the magazine baseplate. Is that normal?

My Vickers has the original magazine but the base was crudely fashioned out of a piece of metal.

Dutch magazines are not serial numbered.
