how does one disasseble the magazine to clean it ??

Hi , I have a military type 4, fxo eagle 37 magazine , how does one disasseble the magazine to clean it ??
many thanks,robbt

Personally I would never use an original magazine like yours, period.
If I really had to clean one I think I would soak it in gasoline without touching the wood/backelite base that tend to be rather fragile.

But now I'll let other members more expert than me to give their contribution.

Most people who take them apart bugger up the pins.

If you want to send it to GT he can take it apart for you. Personally, I just spray them with a cleaner and use swabs or qtips to mess with them.

Honestly... Send it to a specialist like G.T. (on this forum).

He has the tools and expertise to restore original magazines properly.

Get a can of "Gun Scrubber, spray the inside a couple times and the lightly oil. If you don't have gun scrubber soak in carburetor cleaner. If a problem with mag agree with the above send it to GT. Bill

Dip the tube feeding lips first into an appropriate solvent (Hoppe's #9 for instance), agitate slightly, take out of the solvent and drip dry... shake the excess out. Hold the magazine follower all the way down with the loading tool while you swab out the inside with a small cleaning rod with a couple of cleaning patches. Light gun oil and put the magazine back to work. This should keep your magazines clean and functional. Disassembly is not required unless they are in REALLY bad shape... in that case send them to GT.

I would not recommend that Luger magazines be disassembled by an amateur. Unless you are an expert like GT, you will never get the pins back in the way they were before disassembly...

My father once advised me, the only person who takes apart a wristwatch is a jeweler,... or a fool. I believe similar advice applies in this situation.

I will depress the mag spring down with a plastic mag loader and clean the inside of the body with a cotton patch soaked with Breakfree CLP.

The plastic bottom magazine was manufactured by Triple-K. They are considered to be good mags by many, but whether or not it will work in your Luger is a test and find out answer. Every Luger has its quirks. I cannot determine from your out of focus photos who manufactured your aluminum bottom magazine.

your aluminum bottom magazine looks Mexican or Danish.

rhuff 08-25-2014 03:52 PM

John,

I believe that the plastic base mag could possibly be a Stoeger OEM mag. I own a few of them, and they look identical to the photo, but the photos are so fuzzy that it is hard to be sure. The alum base mag is so out of focus that I have no idea.

robbt 08-25-2014 04:20 PM

hi guys , mexican ???
I can try for better pictures , what views would assist a id ??
many thanks,

lugerholsterrepair 08-25-2014 04:36 PM

Robt, Yes..usually Mexican mags or Danish for that matter are marked with the country of origin on the bottom. Denmark, or MEXICO. They also typically have a deep dish out on the aluminum pull. Hard to say for sure...

robbt 08-25-2014 05:18 PM

hi jerry , both are un marked and donnot have the weight of the WW2 one I have ,

I hate to say it, but I find this demonstration pretty crappy. Perhaps for a repair in the field, maybe... But even a home shop can do better to protect the form of the mag and prevent damage. One technique I use is to reach into the follower slot with the tips of a needle-nose spring clamp and compress and hold the spring to relieve all tension on the mag bottom. Instead of wailing away with a misaligned punch and hammer, the pin can be removed by pushing it out with the tip of a toothpick--or at the most, very little force delivered by a punch that is correctly sized.

Supporting the mag body is a bit more complicated than this guy makes it out--the edge of a book? And during his re-installation of the pin, he's hammering away without any support at all for the mag body, which is suspended between the upper part of the body and the mag bottom's knob, which is up on the book!! I won't get into the details, but one needs to contrive some very simple tooling to preform this simple task without buggering things.

Sorry It was the only one I could find in the limited art of luger magazines~

Eric, good work. I'm jut sayin' that a how-to sanctioned/presented by the forum ought to be better than this one. I'm a little embarrassed-by-association! I hope someday soon it is updated with an improved version.

TKS I love a challenge!
