3rd of Agoust 1944 the destruction of Florence bridges
 

70 years ago all Florence bridges except "Ponte Vecchio" were blown up by the German Army while retreating.
I now this is a "Luger" forum, but we often discuss other related topics.
I thought it was good to remind that there are works of art that do not belong to a single state or to a single people but to the humankind.

Hi Sergio, Thanks for your post which is of special interest to me as I'll be visiting Florence next year on a bike tour. My wife and I rode through Flanders this year, full of grim reminders of WWI.

This country is full of history, did you know that in Italy there is over the 75% of the world cultural beauties?
I often say that almost in every little village there is at least a castle or an old church.

Apart from that, there still are many wounds of the last war; after the Armistice of the 8th Sept. 1943 about 50% of the people were still on Mussolini's side and the other half against it.

Here in Turin for instance, now nobody notices any more that on many walls there are some sort o markers with inscriptions of partisans that were killed by the Germans in the years 1943/45

People seem to forget very quicky the horrors of the past, while I can still remember the stories of my father (WWII) and the few I can remember of my grandfather (WWI)

I lived in the city of Livorno from 1976 to 1981, and worked near Pisa. On quiet days at work, I would take my lunch and go into Pisa, and eat my lunch at the top of the leaning tower and watch all the tourists who had saved all their lives to come and spend a couple weeks visit in Italy, and constantly reassure myself that I actually LIVE there.

I also lived and worked near the small town of Oderzo from 1986 to 1988.

I traveled extensively during my time in Italy, and was awed by the history that surrounded me.

My son was baptized in a church that dated back to the 14th century, and had been in active use as a church SINCE that time. My youngest daughter was born in Calambrone, Italy and holds dual citizenship.

I have so many irreplaceable and fond memories of living there...

Firenza (Florence) is probably my favorite city in the whole world.
