Mec-Gar Mag Compatibility Problem
 

I recently purchased two of the newest Mec-Gar P08 magazines (MGLUGP08B)for my post-war Mauser P08, German markings - 1972, imported from Germany by Simpson. (Seems to have been shipped originally to European market and has no Interarms import mark)

Both magazines insert normally and seem to fit properly, but both drop out of the mag-well whenever I fire a round.

This does not happen with the two original Mauser mags that came with the gun, nor does it happen with either of the two 3-K magazines I bought before I could find the Mec-Gars.

Has anyone had compatibility problems between the latest Mec-Gar P08 mags and the post-war P08s?

Most likely your magazine catch is worn. It is easy to remove and examine.

If your mag catch is o.k., you may need to take a needle file and "tune" the mag catch hole on the mags. Compare the mag catch holes on your Mauser mags to the Mec-Gar mags. I had a similar problem with the two Mauser mags that came with my 06/73 Mauser Parabellum. It didn't take much to get the mag catch to fit into the mag catch hole correctly and solve the problem. My mags now work 100%

Mag catch seems okay.

I marked where the top of Mec-Gar mag reached in the upper part of the mag well, and that line was .04-.05 inches above where the Mauser mag was.

So, I took a diamond-pointed Dremel engraving tool under a lower power microscope and adjusted the mag catch hole so that the reach of the Mauser mag and the Mec-Gar are now the same.

I'll take it to the range tomorrow and see if this helps.

I hope that you didn't go the wrong way with your adjustment.

The adjustment lowered the Mec-Gar mag into almost the same locked position as the original Mauser mags. (There is a slight variance between the original Mauser mags.)

The key is to draw a fine, straight line on the upper mag well to use as a reference.

At the range, the Mec-Gar mag now unlocks once in twenty shots instead of almost every shot. This is progress.

After fine tuning, back to the range tomorrow.

Just bought four blue MecGars for my '42 byf and put 32 rounds through each and all worked flawlessly.

I bought mine from Greg Cote (top-notch guy), and he said there had been no other problems with his customers.

Definitely required some hand-fitting for my Post-war Mauser.

You might want to remove the mag catch spring and bend it out a little. This will give you an additional edge in mag retention.

Glad to hear that you are making progress on your problem. Just go slow and methodical. On mine, it took very little filing for the mag catch to correctly catch the mag hole. Keep us informed.
