Where is the serial number on a Luger carbine located???

I see the forearm lug is where it would 'normally' be...Where is it relocated??? :confused:

Did the location vary???

It is on the bottom of the barrel under the rear sight and on the bottom of the frame extension (forearm lug) used to mount the forearm. It didn't vary to the best of my knowledge.

So it's not visible without partial disassembly??? :confused:

Ron, I've seen pics of Luger carbines with Navy rear sights on the toggle, and several different 2 & 4 position barrel mounted rear sights, as well as a carbine using a barrel mount artillery rear sight. Is the serial on the barrel done the same way as on a P08??? That is, land diameter under the serial, both stamped perpendicularly to the bore axis???

I am trying to visualize a T-slot or dovetail for a forearm extension, and where one could relocate the serial. I would have thought the carbine maker would put the serial where it could easily be seen... :confused:

I've been toying with the idea of a long barreled P08, maybe with a forearm, but wasn't sure if I wanted to cut into a perfectly good P08 frame. In the meantime, I made a long barrel out of a Winchester Model 70 barrel in 30/06, re-chambered to 7.65 Parabellum, and turned to fit Mauser carbine rear & front sights. I couldn't decide between the FN M24/30 or the Argentine 1891 Cavalry carbine rear sight, but they're both the same ID so I took pics with both mounted. The front sight is the 1891 Argentine, without the hood. Extractor cut hasn't been made yet, which is why the toggle is sticking up. :)

Haven't decided if I'll taper the barrel more or leave it like it is...

Here is a pic of a carbine barrel serial number. I blurred out the last two digits because the gun isn't mine. :) You can see that the mounting for a carbine rear sight is quite a bit different than that of a LP08. The sight base is a separate piece and is silver soldered to the barrel.

Thanks Ron! I would not be copying a carbine exactly, or even partially; like the original makers, I would adapt what I have lying around... :)

I could cut a section out of my sight base to mimic the 'real' carbines, but it's not necessary.

I was interested in preserving the original serial. To that end I am examining how to mount a forearm without obliterating the number, or at least not hiding it. I think I can do it, but I would like the number to display without disassembly. :rolleyes:
