The Story Of Pappy Boyington And The Black Sheep Squadron
|
I don't have access to YouTube, but years ago I read his autobiography. Great reading, sad ending. :(
There was also a TV series about his WW II service, which was quite entertaining. I was especially amused by the episodes beginnings/endings. They showed the pilot in his aircraft, with the other members of his flight forming up behind him. Most episodes showed the F4U Corsair...Except the first episode, which described his leaving Gen Claire Chennault's Flying Tigers and joining a Marine squadron...That episode showed the correct P-40 Warhawk that Chennault's airmen flew... :) Other than that, I can't recall anything about the series... :D |
Cirelaw--thank you for the Marine Air posting--Happy Memorial Day and Semper Fi!

At the end of each season, he would have us over to his house for Pizza. He retained much more memorabilia from his Korean War and onward flying career than I ever saw of his WW2 days. We were of course aware that he was with a famous squadron and were aware of Pappy Boyington long before the TV show made him generally known. This was in the little town of Franklin Lakes, New Jersey. I had no idea that he had moved to New Orleans nor that he had fairly recently passed away.

My father's unit captured Munda airfield, Boyington's base for many of his exploits. I see Boyington's grave at Arlington whenever I visit my father's, which is nearby.

Boyington died at the Fresno CA VA hospitable where my brother works at.
