Wolff magazine springs

I tried to put a new Wolff +10% magazine spring in my 1920 DWM Commercial 7.65mm magazine. The new spring is considerably longer than the old one and binds against the front of the magazine body when it is compressed. Both the old and new springs are of the round variety. The new spring is heavier gauge wire than the old one. How can I solve this problem? Contra.

mag spring woes....

Hi there! The length & the strength are not a problem! The diameter of the spring after it takes a set, and the width and shape of the spring channel in the magazine shell are probably the culprit! The magazine shell has to be reformed with the wide parts maybe needing narrowed, and the narrow parts maybe needing widening???....... It is a delicate procedure, most likely if you start trying to straighten it, you will cause more issues then you solve... But, that being said, it can be done!....:)..... Best of Luck to you in your magazine repair quest! Best to all, til...lat'r....GT...

I would just send it to the guy who knows how to do it..GT. I have sent this gentleman many a magazine and they always come back right. He is being modest in the post above...

What about the OD???

I am not convinced that any of Wolff's springs are any better than OEM springs...I try to keep an open mind, but my tests have not convinced me of that...Yet... :)

I generally go with the OEM springs - if new than likely much better anyway.

NEVER tried to replace a spring in a mag....

BTW, you can change the spelling or wording of a posting by clicking on the EDIT button down lower right.

OD effects...

Hi Rich, when the spring takes a set, and continually does so, (depends on quality of spring material, and cycles of use) it gradually becomes larger in overall coil OD (and shorter in length)... And, it starts dragging on the magazine shell at the worst times! Basically at full compression, it becomes a sort of brake on the mag shell from dragging in the spring relief area with this now, overly expanded OD!!...Almost all springs are manufactured to spec, and take a set, gradually, to out of spec, or failure from fatigue... I designed a P.08 magazine replacement spring of the best material, to take a permanent (or nearly so) set just into spec...... Strong and never drag from setting?? It seems as if they are, "bullet proof!"...:)..... Sorry for the lame pun!... best to all, til...lat'r....GT:cheers: .

Hi Gerry! :) My comment was directed at the OP...He didn't mention if he measured the new spring OD against the old one... :D

Hi Rich!

Yes! Good point! I completely misinterpreted the question..... You are also correct in that the original springs were pretty good, and as such, far better then most repros... Although, MEC-GAR's latest offering has a pretty robust and longer life spring than before?.. Or at least it seems so....til...lat'r....GT...:)

Do mag springs ever become less effective over time or when you leave a mag fully loaded after a prolonged period? If so, how long is bad time? Any maintenance tips or suggestions for long term care? ~~Eric

alanint 07-14-2014 08:52 PM

Yes and yes. Time is hard to pinpoint, but I think any mag left loaded more than a year will probably have issues.

I second sending your mag(s) to G.T. They end up working like a champ, and his prices are ridiculously LOW!

I believe that changes in temperature and humidity have more effect on mag springs than how long they are compressed. TH
