Help with ID and values
Hello
I have two lugers and some magazines I am looking to sell. Is there someone in Riverside,CA that can look over what I have and give me a good description and ID what I have and possible value? I have two lugers, 14 magazine and 10 loading tools. i am pretty sure the loading tools are repro. Also some grips that were supposed to bakelite but are probably not. Lugers are mismatched and one does not have the hold open. This is not a for sale ad. I am looking for advice and info. Thanks Doug |
The mags would be worth near a couple hundred each, if they are what they appear to be--FXO/Haenel-Schmieiser. Nazi proofs and good condition would be the best scenario. If the holes in the backs of the grips are threaded, they are original. How mis-matched are the pistols--lost of different numbers, or just one or two that don't match the rest? More pics needed for most accurate evaluation... Check other posts to see what kinds of shots are posted for this.

The grips are threaded, is that a for sure way of telling they are genuine bakelite?
I have 5 fxo mags one bakelite base, 4 aluminum, I wood base serial 2082 no other marks 2x 2/1001 serial 5575 2, 8844 2 6 more various marked mags |
The threaded thing is not a for sure indicater. Somewhere on this site you will find a sticky regarding ID'ing orig. bakelite grips, but it is not easy and I'm not sure that I can do it. Seems like it comes down to the sound it makes when lightly struck.
You must post a price with the items for sale on this "for sale" section, but I don't know what the policy would be regarding interested parties contacting you off list regarding offers. Bottom line is that you have a lot of stuff that we all can use, but we need some better photos and info. before the money can start changing hands. Good luck! dju |
This isn't a for sale thread. I am trying to get info on what I have. I would like to find someone local to me in Riverside, CA that can look over what I have. Los Angeles or even San Diego area can work also. Once I have all my ducks in a row I will post items for sale. in the for sale section.
I forgot I asked in a thread about 6 years ago about the grips. I was told they are not bakelite. I would like a definitive answer obviously. |
Once you decide on selling I may be interested. Thanks

This is the last item I have. New and signed by Jan C Still, Value? Amazon has them listed from $350 to $700 is that any where close to the value?

Doug,
Jan Still's books sold for around a hundred bucks new, and they are now unavailable new, except maybe the last one. $300 mark seems to be the going rate, IMHO those asking more are gougers, not collectors. The hot pin test for the grips: heat up a pin point to red hot and apply it to a discreet place on the back of the grip. If the material is plastic of any sort, it will melt and smell like burning plastic. Bakelite would not melt, and it would smell resin-y, if at all. Molded copies of original grips would usually not have the holes threaded, as the threading would not allow their removal from a straightforward mold. If they are threaded, the molding system would have had a removable threaded stud to create the threaded hole. Keep the pics coming! |
Doug,
Congratulations indeed. I've got that book, mine came from Germany like all the others I've got, the only thing that I regret is that none of them is signed by Jan Still. Sergio |
Doug, I paid $250 for one recently..not signed from another collector.
I live in Yuma AZ but 180 miles from San Diego! |
One of the Lugers has unit marking. Does anyone know what they mean?

I would have to see a couple clear focus non glare photos of both sides of the grips to render an opinion on whether or not they are original or reproduction. The photo of the inside of the grips is not quite good enough.

small chip, would bakelite chip like this? I heated up a pin red hot and put it to the grips. You can see two marks below the long horizontal scratch. If it was plastic I would assume it would have gone in and not left a little mark. The L.P.Th. marking is for Landespolizei Thüringen. The 625 is a property number.

I will say it again if there is someone local LA Riverside San Diego who can look over all of what I have I will pay you or give you some items. I do not want to misrepresent anything I have. I also want to know what I have and actual value of it. Any sales I get on this website I will donate %3 of the sales to the site.

The "Black Widow" grips are fakes.
|
Hey Doug, I was going to be polite and say that the grips were "reproductions" instead of fakes :D
They are actually poor quality reproductions that have been molded using original grips as the model. They are fine for a shooter, to protect the decades old originals when shooting, but generally worth about $20.00 or less... Quality photographs will get you real world market values from the experts on this forum for the items you have. Any donation to keep the forum "on the air" will be greatly appreciated. There is a link at the top of every forum page where readers/members can make a donation. |
