G date luger
Hello all, I posted on another forum but you can never get enough advice. I was wondering if anyone can tell me anything about this luger from markings and serial? From what little research I've done I think they are early date proof marks. How can you tell if it was police or military?
The serial number is 1989. There are no prefixes. Magazine says 1989 at base. What do the marks below the serial on the magazine mean? Appears to read 8,82 below serial on barrel. The gun was supposedly liberated from Dachau concentration camp on April 29th. I know to be weary of all stories, but the veteran in question did serve with the 45th Infantry Division (Thunderbird) and was present at the liberation. An idea on value? Thanks. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...203_000617.jpg http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...203_000629.jpg http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...3_202319-1.jpg http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...3_202527-1.jpg http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...3_202336-1.jpg |
Welcome aboard, Scott!
I think the pistol itself is the real deal, but I'm a little leery about the serial on the magazine. It looks scrubbed and renumbered to me. How about a shot of the "G" over the chamber and closer shots of the strawed parts? |
What do the two symbols beneath the serial on the mag mean? And how can you tell if you have a police or military issue? Strawing has a nice gold color.
More views of the G http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...131_203638.jpg http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...129_001752.jpg http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...4_002707-1.jpg No I'm not looking into bore lol, I moved the camera over to get the shot. The solid copper HP lights up the bore well with flash to observe the rifling. |
The + is for the second issued mag
the 63 with eagle is the inspector proof. The G Date Looks to be in great condition but the mag is surely not originally numbered in the correct style and font. |
[QUOTE=stressed;249323]And how can you tell if you have a police or military issue?
Generally for the Nazi era there will be a Police acceptance stamp on the right side(in place of the army stamps). The pistol will also have a sear safety. This is not the rule however because you can also find Army pistols that have been diverted to Police that will still have the Army acceptance stamps. Do a search for "Police" and you will get enough reading on these to keep you busy for a couple days. |
stressed, your G-Date serial number is 1989b. It was completed about March 1935. The pistol looks very nice, but the magazine has been enhanced (messed with).
The magazine was originally for a 1936 L-Block Luger. The numbers were erased and 1989 added. The inspection mark is Droop Wing Eagle over 63. The inspection mark for G-Date 1989b would have been Droop Wing Eagle over 154, Hope this helps! |

Wow, you guys sure know quite a bit - glad I registered. The gentleman in question has always had the luger, I would love to ask his wife where the mag came from, but I don't want to bother her with trivial matters in her age, and she probably wouldn't know anyway.
Any idea on value? I don't plan on selling, I'm just thinking for insurance. Thanks guys, your expertise has been a real help. |
Anyone else have a problem with the numbers on the front of the frame? Crooked, full of bluing, and no halos.

receivers have halos? oh man thanks for making me study David
|
What are the halos?
Thanks |

Does the "G" look suspicious to anyone?
|
So someone thinks it has been reblued? Restamped on frame? The bluing is pretty wore on the grip in between the wood grip, as if held a lot.
Now after viewing many other lugers, including ones under glass and such at cabela's and whatnot, this one is in pretty good condition IMO. |
SteveM: So were the frames numbered before the bluing process and not the barrels?
All; I believe that I stand corrected. I just checked a 1936 gun and it has no halos on the frame number or suffix, but it does on the barrel. My bad. dju |
