1918 Artillery Question
I am looking at a 1918 Artillery luger that has some problems, missing rear site and broken barrel extension. Asking price $1000. My first reaction is to let it go because of the broken barrel extension. Don't know what caused break, but probably over pressure from ammo used. I know I can find parts, but will the gun still be usable? All numbers I have seen so far match, and general condition is good.
Any thoughts. |
Sounds like one to leave alone unless you can get it for much less. Without a hands on inspection to see what all is wrong hard to tell anything. Bill

If it were a decent-looking example, at best it will be a decent-looking shooter, as it will be cast into this category by having a mis-matched extension and sight assembly. One might obtain these parts, as you say-- ~$1-200 extension, same range, maybe a little more for sight leaf, plus same range for installation. Value you'd be "shooting" for is $1-1.2K for nice Arty shooter. If you were to get it for $400, then fix it, you'd be OK (presuming no other damage).
I'm with Bill. |

Is it the one on a german auction site ?
I see same broken item before very well repared , and the gun shot well now ! |
No it is not. It's at a local gun shop and I've decided to let it pass. Had to many other peoples problems guns that I tried to save. Look only for GOOD collector level antiques.

Hi Bob, I also had an Artillery with the same problems as this one, missing rear sight and a cracked receiver, I believe I paid about $1300. for the parts and labor to get it up and running, and also like this one, mine was otherwise all matching including the grips, however I bought mine at auction quite a few years ago for $56.00, I figure I now have in it about what it is worth should I ever decide to sell it. I think you made the right decision in passing on this one.
I agree wholeheartedly with Bill Lyons and David. Lon |
