New to the community - 1913 DWM

I have just purchased a P08 online. I should have it in a few days. Always wanted one since was about 11 years old when I built one of those cap/cartridge replicas in the early 80's.

It is a 1913 DWM. Billed as and appears to be numbers matching. Has the 1920 property stamp. I will post better pictures when I actually have the pistol.

Welcome!

Your P08 has the sear safety and remnants of a magazine safety which are the marks of a 'police Luger'.

Looking forward to more pics! :)

welcome Joe,

very grey looking finish? But overall in nice shape, love the slightly off kilter 1920 as that is a great thing to see for me :)

There are supposedly no import marks.

There is a member here, "G.T.", who specializes in restoring old broken magazines. You would be wise to restore your wood-bottom mag and obtain a Mec-Gar magazine if you desire to shoot it... ;)

RoyalTermite 01-08-2014 10:32 AM

I bought 2 new 8 shot aftermarket mags on ebay to shoot with. Still looking for someone that has Mec-Gar in stock.

Sear safety and maybe also Police unit markings on the front strap, anyway it looks like a nice gun, congratulations and happy lugering! :-)

Congratulations on your new Luger!

Well I picked up the pistol today. Very nice condition. All numbers matching including the grips. (magazine does not match) Some light wear on barrel end. Left grip is a little loose. The magazine is in good shape aside from the damaged wood base. Spring in the magazine is really strong. Much stronger than the 2 aftermarket mags I picked up.

The finish is not a high gloss. More a dull satin black. Bore and barrel in nice shape. Very clean and bright with crisp rifling.

I snapped some pics. Any input on the markings and proof marks welcome.

It appears to have been prepared for refinishing by bead or sand blasting. The color tones of the finish would also be explained by a refinish. The last pic in the first series gives another clue to the refinish, in that the toggle axle's retaining pin is no longer in the white.

It still looks great, however, so enjoy! Personally, I'd shoot it after changing out the firing pin, extractor, and ejector, to avoid breaking a numbered or original part. And if you send your grip scales to Hugh Clark for spiffing up, this pistol will be a real beauty.

Yet the barrel markings clearly show halos.

Yes, it's an enigma shrouded in a riddle which is cloaked in mystery.:D

Doug is very likely correct, but there's a lot of the white substance used to accent the characters all over the place, and this may help in creating an illusory artifact. Halos are apparent in the pics, but it's time to bring out the 10x loupe for a closer look. It's possible the white is re-creating the appearance of halos by interacting with whatever is left of them.

RoyalTermite 01-12-2014 01:32 PM

The white is chalk powder I laid in the markings to see them better. Will take pics again, I removed powder when I cleaned and oiled it.

Photograph the barrel markings straight on in the best possible light. I'm basing my observation from the photo taken without chalk of the barrel and lower receiver. The barrel does appear to have a different finish from the balance of the gun. Would it be beyond reason to have had a police reissue partially refinish only on the parts that showed wear?

The entire toggle train assy is definitely reblued.
The "Gesichert" looks like it was blued over also.

Since this gun does appear to be reblued, I can't understand the perfectly good barrel halos.
Has anyone ever heard of halos remaining on a refinished rust blued Luger?

Personally I'm not seeing halos on the barrel #'s. There is a slight deviation around the numbers from the metal being pushed up, but it is minor and could well be from pre-re-bluing stamping.
All numbers seem to be deeply blued down inside of the grooves.
And those left side numbers look "odd".
I'd call it an old rework and move on.

:) I'd call it "I am happy with my purchase" :)

I do very much appreciate ALL the input and information that all of you are giving me.

Thanks!

Joe
