Heat Wave 2014
1 Attachment(s)
This is for all you surf bunnies in SoCal and you octogenarians in Florida... :D
I posted a similat pic a year or two ago... Pic taken at 8:00am Tuesday; Gov Cuomo implemented a state of emergency for Western New York state last night. Blizzard conditions; no unnecessary travel; Thruway closed; National Guard called out. Just for S&G...I let my Weimaraner out and she pooped as usual; let her back in, fed her, put on my parka and went out to collect the poop...I had to chip it out...It froze solid in about 10 minutes...(She's a fast eater)... I'm waiting for it to stop blowing so I can go out and put a battery charger on my car battery...and hope it'll start... I live about 20 miles NorthEast of Buffalo NY, known as the "Miami of the North"... Yeah...Not quite... :grr: |
Goodness, I'm not envying you.
I would say that I suffer more in Summer than in Winter, but I've reached the point when I'm starting to think that I can't stand neither Summer heat nor the cold days of January ... :-) Well according to an old sayng here in Italy the coldest days of the year are supposed to be the so called "i giorni della merla" (the days of the hen-blackbird) i.e. the last three days of January, in fact according to a legend the blackbird used to be white, then in those cold days she went on top of a chimney to look for some warmth and since then she became black. Not too much to do with Lugers this time, still, take care Sergio |

Cool legend! There's a parable about a bird migrating South that gets caught in a snowstorm...I'll have to look it up... ;) Buffalo & southtowns got 2 to 3 feet of snow on top of blowing drifting snow...One city controller in Hamburg actually pulled the snowplows off the streets last night...I guess they got tired of getting lost & plowing empty fields... :roflmao: Buffalo Airport was closed; all flights cancelled...My mailgirl hasn't shown up yet, I'm wondering if mail delivery was cancelled today... I've never been to Italy; like to go someday...And Spain and Portugal too... :) |
notice al gore is not around banging the global/warming drum?

No problem starting the car though, and went to work in DC as usual. It was 5 degrees when I got to work. I was dressed appropriately... fortunately, I once got to spend a couple weeks above the arctic circle... so I learned real quick how to stay alive in cold weather... dress in LAYERS... cover your head, and your mouth and nose when breathing... wear insulated boots and good gloves/mittens. ... Rich, your inside temperature was only 60 degrees? Do you wear lots of sweaters, and flannel pajamas? or was your heat pump having a hard time keeping up with the cold weather? |
Rich,
That is just TOOOOOO Damn Cold!!! I gripe about our summers here in So. Az.(a blast furnace), but the winters are paradise. No one in their right mind leaves So. Az. in the winter. |

That thermometer is on an outside kitchen wall...Right now [5:00pm] it's 62º/9ºF...My nighttime cycle is at 68º with a +- of ~3º...And it hadn't kicked in yet...(8:00am transition from 68º to 72º)... It's still cold...Dog just went out again; I gotta get my shovel and chip some more poop... :D Edit: No mail delivery...With the airport closed, there was probably no mail...Roads closed; no truck traffic...All our mail/parcels come through Buffalo or Rochester...Thruway closed...Bah!!! :grr: |
Here in Nebraska today seems like a heat wave. Probably 15 degrees, but sunny and no wind. Sweatshirt weather...

Finally we can open the doors and windows during the day and turn off the AC!! Eric in Port St Lucie, Fla! http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/weather/

We got done with some -35 to -45 below here about a week or so ago. No big deal, just dress for the cold, happens every year. I would expect more within a couple weeks. But it is Alaska, after all.... I'll do my 2+ mile run down to 20 below. And we don't do "wind chill" here, just air temp.
|
Well I feel like a real ***** now...

0º seems balmy now... ;) |
I was only in Buffalo once in the winter. 3ft of snow and -30 wind chill - no thank you.
But I would take Buffalo over Alaska in the winter. Winter weather here this week is same as always, 42 deg and raining (boo hoo). |
75 here today's high..palm trees swaying in a light breeze..had the garage doors open most of the day and walking around in shorts & T shirt. Yup..cold sucks. I go where the weather suits my clothes...and that's South Western Arizona!
|
Well, we say that 30 below keeps the "riff raff" away.....But in all honesty, I've been here since '69, and consider it home. The winters don't bother me. And like most folks who love where they live, I think of it as "God's country". I will take my "frozen hell" over the overpopulated lower 48 any day of the week. Every time I go down, I'm very thankful to come back. I was just enjoying a meal of silver salmon that we caught down in Valdez this August. Things like that make it very worthwhile. Plus, no stupid gun laws......I can enjoy my M-2 browning anytime I want.

There is at least one service out there that rents RVs by the week; you can fly out, drive around, and fly back home...Or, I suppose, stay... :) |
In these days every time I watch the weather forecast on tv and they report about this flippin' cold weather in the States I think of you all "Luger mates", and sincerely hope that nobody has too many problems with those unusual temperatures. Let's keep our fingers crossed and let's wait for Spring.
|
Second day of no mail delivery...No pickup...No delivery...I drove to the small-village PO near me and mailed a couple letters...Money Orders actually...Weather is improving, 19º today, supposed to be 43º on Saturday...That should be fun...There's an ice jam in the Niagara River, flood warnings out already...

Weather on Cape Cod
Guys,
It's pretty cold on the Cape 8 or 9 this am when I got up. 18+ snow on Fri, light fluffy stuff that blew all around Sat, then Sun and Mon it went up to +50, really, rained and now most of that white stuff gone. Back in a cold streak but heading to FL till spring. Aldo35 |
