1938 luger.
 

I havent been on in awhile. But just picked up my 3rdlast luger this morning. What i bought is a mismatched 1938 luger 4" barrel the sn is 4662 and the barrel sideplate, takedown has 62. The toggle has 62 on it but has a dwm logo so im sure thats wrong. The extractor and firing pin doesnt match either. Magazine has the aluminum base with 1147 n + with a bird over 63. At least it looks like 63. Proof marks on the barrel is a crown over N the top has a crown over U. There isnt the other proofs on the side like my 1918, dmw or 1917, erfurt. Ill try to get pics up later. It may have been reblued but definetly not buffed. Came with what maybe a repop Holster. The gent I bought it from says it does shoot well. Being a non matching luger I feel comfortable shooting it. Bore looks great too. Im sure this would be a mauser built gun correct? I know without pics its difficult to give any advice, but with the minimal description on the proffmarks any information is appreciated. The grips look like the regular checkered grips but made of a resin. Thanks. Jim

Not much to add, definitely a great shooter. Shoot it often! I'm surprised that the grips are not wood. Hard to tell in the photos. Sure they are not wood? Look like sort of dry wood grips to me.

I should have taken pictures of the back of the grips. You can see pinholes from the molding process. Jim

Looking at this closer the takedown lever, and sideplate looks to have been forcematched. The toggles been matched too by someone not realizing dmw wasnt around in 1938. There is no import marks. I went into this purchase knowing I I was buying a mismatched shooter so as long as it functions I'm happy.

..Looks like a nice Luger....I noticed there are no proof marks on the right side of the frame....is that correct.?........reason asking is I purchased last year an all matching 1918 DWM and there are no proof marks on the right side as well..??....is this seen very often and does anyone have an idea why there would be no proofs..?...Danke ..Hans

No proofmarks on the rightsode. My 1918phone dmw does have all the proofmarks but this one does not. Only proofmark on the upper is the crown over u over the serial number. And the barrel hasto the crown over N. Hopefully someone with information will chime in. Jim

I went and shot it last weekend. I think the original mag sits a bit low as i had a coulple failire to feeds. I hold the mag up and she cycles fine. Over on jan c still sight I was told the frame is probably early 40s because of the P08 stamp. No info on the lack of proof marks though unless they were buffed off which would need alot of material removed. Jim

As an FYI, the Crown/N proof on the barrel and no serial number would indicate it is commercial and not original to the rest of the pistol.

This whole thing seems to be cobbled together from quite a few guns. Between the force matche, mismatched parts, now a commercial barrel. I just installed cheap import made in india grips. But in the end of the day I think I have a Luger that I can consider a shooter. I paid $550 for it with a reproduction holster. It did come with a real luger magazine. I understand it has no collector value and a serious collector probably wouldnt even buy it as a parts gun. But its going to be my shooter. Ive got two other lugers. My first was a dwm 1918 reblued and buffed matching numbers except the take down lever and sideplate. This was a impulse buy and im still happy to own it. The second one is a 1917 erfurt all matching except a unnumbered firing pin. Probably never shoot it, may end up selling it and leep the shooters. Jim

You did quite well on the price even as a shooter. If it is reliable and accurate, so much the better.

Surely some bits come from a "commercial" and the frame probably from a black widow.
It's a nice piece anyway.

Between the mag and the holster, you probably have no more than $350 into the gun, so that's an incredibly cheap shooter. BTW - that #1147 mag is way too nice for that gun - please sell it to me!

im going to try me mecgar mag and see how it runs

New update. Took it out with the mecgar mag and still had a failire to feed. The bullet will stick up in the air. This eas the winchesterwhitebox. I went to the blazerbrass and it fed everything fine except on three occasions the toggle didnt go forward. A little nudge and the bullet chambered fine. Im thinking maybe a weak spring? All in all its a fun gun to shoot. I took my ealther p1 and rock island .45 both of those performed perfect. Jim

Sounds like it is time for some fresh springs all around. These Lugers are such a balancing act with springs and ammo.

I cant buy anything at this moment, but when Im ready, where do you recommend I order springs from? Any particular tension etc? thanks. jim

I would just go with factory strength springs - Wolff springs are good

I am sure that many places have kits, but Wolff happens to be who I have bought from before
