1914 Erfurt Artillery

Is a 1914 Erfurt Artillery worth as much, and as rare as, a 1914 DWM Artillery?

Edward Tinker 12-04-2013 08:33 PM

No

lugerholsterrepair 12-04-2013 08:36 PM

Darius..A 1914 DWM would start at around $10,000 Perhaps much more..a 1914 Erfurt..is not common but not rare..maybe $3500-4500?

George Anderson 12-04-2013 10:21 PM

Estimated production:

1914 DWM LP08s 1125
1914 Erfrurts LP08s 23000

Hah! That was my answer too Ed, but I deleted it because I didn't have the time to look up the numbers. I figured some of the experts would chime in. :)

Wow, big difference

... I wonder if this is a bit misleading or perhaps I misread it

..For the Artillery Luger collector, this gun and the 1914 DWM is the "holy grail" of the hobby. This 1914 Artillery is also UNIT marked, which is also very desirable. It is marked L.M.K. 26. Which I believe is a Light Machine Gun Unit. However, is someone else has better information, just let us know. The gun is all matching including the back and front site, the firing pin, the hold open, the grips and the magazine. All parts also have the proper Erfurt proofs as well. In fairness, the matching magazine has some signs of being renumbered, but the rest of the gun is guaranteed to be all original and correct. I would rate the original finish to be about 95-96% with some mild "browning" or patina especially on the straps and the sideplate. Halos are present in the serial under the barrel. This is the FIRST and only 1914 Erfurt Luger that Legacy has ever offered!...,.

How dare they label our passion a "Hobby"!

lugerholsterrepair 12-05-2013 08:54 AM

Maybe a little but this is a very decent offering from a respectable dealer who knows a matching pistol. Condition is a little off but anyone looking for a 1914 Erfurt..This might be a consideration. UNIT marked Artillery's ARE rare.

It's only a hobby when you don't make any money...

Yes you're right Jerry.
I just think it's misleading as being on the same level as the 1914 DWM. Had I not known from Bob Young that the 1914 DWM is the "holy grail", I would have believed the ad, until I was able to get the opinions of advanced collectors. For the novice, that may not know of this forum, this misrepresentation could potentially lead to a quick sale!!! just my 1 1/2 cents :D still working on getting up to 2cents!

Norme 12-05-2013 03:32 PM

The 1914 DWM Artillery may be the "Holy Grail" of Artilleries, but it's far from being the Holy Grail of Luger collecting! There are other Luger variations that are far rarer and more desirable, the 1904 Navy, the Cartridge Counter and the .45 Cal, to name just three.
Regards, Norm

Maestro 12-07-2013 09:55 PM

.... well did more research, and it appears maybe this would be 2nd to the "Holy Grail" of Artillery Lugers. would this be a fair conclusion?

George Anderson 12-07-2013 10:50 PM

No.

Anybody who buys without proper research and knowledge is silly. I had something very witty and smart and lost it :grr:
even older books have approx numbers of lugers made (as shown above)

Novices should buy books, research and get good info

I have seen several collections where people bought for investment and usually there are pretty and restored guns there....

the Blue Book (S.P. F) states: "1914 date is only one seen, 8in barrel" referring to the 1914 Erfurt Artillery.
And with the Imperial Unit Marking, it's even in lower numbers available.

1914 was the only year Erfurt made an Artillery.
Still's Imperial Luger states only about 5% were unit marked.
23000 is shown as # produced;I think it was a much lower amount.
It took me 10 years to find a 98% 1914 Erfurt Artillery.
