Proof Marks
The number 63 appears under the Mauser proofs on my luger. Can anyone tell me what the 63 stands for? Under the barrel is the serial# and another 8/82 stamped under that. Can anyone tell me what that means. Thanks, This is a great site, Andy

Re: Proof Marks
The 63's indicate Mauser manufacture. There should be a third mark there. The8.82 is the bore land diameter, this varies from 8.82 to 8.85 on different Lugers.

Re: Proof Marks
Mine is an 8.81 is that normal? The luger is an S/42 1937 if that helps.

Jan Still reports 8.81 to 8.85 in Third Reich Luger, the lands diamter in mm

Re: Proof Marks
If it is stamped on the barrel of an accepted pistol, it is normal in the inspector's opinion. The 63 refers to an inspector--that inspector's number, perhaps being used by several people in his office, was applied to all Mauser products accepted under contract by the German military in the period 1935-1939. Products made at nearby factories not part of Mauser would also have been accepted by inspector 63 because the inspector's inspected items made in a general area. 77 in Poland, 37 near Suhl, 623 (?) in Vienna etc. though maybe not in the 35-39 period.

Re: Proof Marks
Andy,
mlm pretty well explained the Waffenamt number on your Luger. For a little more information, go to the Technical Information section of the Forum and click on "Markings". There is a History of the Heereswaffenamt that you may find interesting. Marvin |
