Here is a pic of a mainspring tool. This is in a small paper-back titled "Lugers Unlimited" by F.G. Tilton MSgt.,USAF. The booklet is dated 1965..SteveM

Looks kind a like a leather awl, you could flatten the point on one, heat it up and bend it like that one. Then what would you do with it? Hugh......no wise crackers!!!!

Re: Mainspring tool

This is indeed a photo of an original type tool to pull up the recoil spring guide and to unhook it from the recoil lever. I've developed a better method to do this; the tool consist of two pieces of flat steel stock with a small hole drilled at the end for a pin to go thru. When the PO8 grips are removed, the spacing of flat steel pieces is just wider than the grip straps, so that they can be pushed on to frame and pin installed thru them and the spring guide. Then the tool works as a lever against the bottom of the frame, so that the guide can be lifted with one hand, allowing the other to be used to disengage it from the lever or reset it during assembly. Tom, can you post a picture of your tool? (EOM)

John Sabato 03-21-2002 12:41 PM

Sorry Hugh, but Tom doesn't have a computer!

He uses a WebTV appliance to surf the web and it has no storage and no way to connect a scanner or camera...

Hey Tom, if you are listening and you take a good photo of your tool, send it to me or Hugh and we will scan it and post it for you...

regards,

John

Re: Tom, can you post a picture of your tool?

Hugh, Unfortunately, I don't have photo capabilities. If I can find a spare, I'll send one for your inspection and you can do the photo. Also, you may want to revise your Step 5 photo, as the open end of the recoil spring guide hook appears to be against the frame, which is wrong. Tom h.

Re: Sorry, wrong photo

Hugh, I meant Step 6 photo, show hook to rear instead of forward. Tom h.

Re: Sorry, wrong photo

Yes, it mentioned this in the text that went with picture 6, it was late and I was tired! THOR "The picture is not 100% correct as the hooked end must be turned so that when the entire assembly is in the frame the hook of the guide rod will go over the small cross bar on the recoil lever."

Re: Tom, can you post a picture of your tool?

Tom,

That would be great, as I'm sure a lot of others on the forum would like to see what it looks like. Who knows, this may be a new item of revenue for you!

Re: Tom, can you post a picture of your tool?

Thor, I doubt that their are any other Forum members that change as many recoil springs as you and I do. I had about ten of these tools made over 15 year ago, and have probably sold them all by now. Tom h
