Standard Catalog of Luger

I have the above reference by one Aarron Davis dated 2006.

My question is: Are his "Rarity Ratings" generally accurate? I realize that was 7+ years ago and new information about quantities and such have come to light but I am looking for a general classification that could be used at a gun show.

And, of course, I am not refering to their pricing information.

If not is there a better one that would cover the whole subject of Lugers.

Thanks in advance

Gary

No book covers well, all lugers - his is not bad for very basic research - there is a write up here on the forum about this book.

For instance, his information on Simson lugers is very old info and wrong in the numbers - he stated in both the S toggle (code) and the Simson & Son toggle descriptions that about 10,000 were made, well to most people that would equal 20k - I assume he meant 10,000 total, which is a wrong number - almost 12,000 were made, with about a 1,000 S toggles.

So, old books like Kenyon, Datig and Jones are good books but old info and good to have.

Jan Still's books are excellent, but except for the WW1 era Central Powers (around $100 shipped), all are $250-$350 on the market (he is sold out long ago).

Thanks Ed, I really am just looking for something that the average tire kicker can look at and figure I wasn't pulling the term "very rare" or whatever out of my ..... A real collector that comes along will understand the subjectivity of such a comment.

I just wanted to get a valid opinion of the classifications the book uses. And I hear you saying he is probably in the ball park. For my Simson I'll just put "Damn hard to find" and let it go at that.... LOL.

Thanks again.

Gary,

Simson's are not that hard to find. I know of at least three or four FS right now.
I think rare just means you will have to pay a lot more for them.
