Another Old 1906 sailor

Recently aquired this one. My first Luger. Always wanted a Navy, they just seemed the best proportioned of the Luger clan. Appears as though it may have been refinished at the time of alteration, as the proofs seem a little "soft". Plus the lower Gesichert is blued over. But other than that, everything seems in order. All the metal matches, although the grips were replaced somewhere along the line, but fit nicely and are consummate with the age and overall condition. If anyone out there has Navy mag #4233a and would part with it, that would be great.

Doug, Looks like a sweet one to me!

Hi Doug, Welcome to the forum! It's always nice to see a previously unrecorded Navy. If you email me I will send you a link to the full Navy List which has all known Imperial Navies, some 1,500 guns. There is no orphan magazine #4233 listed (Navy mags do not have suffix letters), but there are several that are close.
May we see close-up photos of the proofs on the left receiver and the barrel serial number?
Thanks, Norm

In addition to Norm's photo requests it would be interesting to see a photo of the thumb safety in the down position.
Thanks
Ron

The sun came out this morning, so I was able to get some better close ups. Here are the photos you guys requested. Hope to get it to the range in the next day or two. The bore is excellent. Thanks!

Hi Doug, Apart from not seeing halos on the barrel serial numbers, this gun does not look refinished to me. Can you post more photos of those numbers, they should look like these. It makes a big difference in value.
Regards, Norm

As close as I can get with my cheap little camera.

Thank you for the additional photos. That is the only First Issue Altered that I have seen where the original GESICHERT in the lower position was still visible and not machined away. Nice example and I agree with you that it has been refininshed, but very well...I would be pleased to have it.

Hi Doug, Thanks for the new photo. I don't see a crown/M on the bottom of the barrel, if it's not there the barrel is a replacement.
Regards, Norm

There is a Crown/M above the serial number and below the "Germany" import mark on Doug's pistol.

(see last photo in post #5)

It got washed out by the sun in the second photo....but it is there.

First of all welcome to this Forum, then congratulations it seems a beautiful Luger, and surely a big step as a "first Luger" to buy.
The photos maybe are not spectacular but you seem to have got a lovely thing, that IF it was refininshed they made a pretty good work.

Took it out to the range yesterday and ran a couple mags of ammo through it. Functioned flawlessly and accuracy was very good, (considering my eyesight). I dropped in a replacement extractor, ejector and firing pin to keep the originals from wear/breakage. Fun to shoot, though I doubt I will shoot it much, probably once or twice a year. Ordered a stock and holster rig from CMR, as an original is "unobtanium". Cheers, Doug

VERY VERY Nice... Congrats! Must be beginner's luck on your first one to find one so very well cared for...
