Range report, 1940 42
My wife and I went to the range today, where - among other things - I actually shot my 1940 42 for the first time.
It was an almost flawless experience. My takedown lever spring hasn't arrived yet, so I had to keep an eye on the sideplate - it came off once. I used two separate magazines - one is the incorrect, but WWII era mag that came with the pistol, the other is a no-name repro I picked up on eBay. The repro functioned fine, the WWII showed 1 failure to lock open on empty. What makes this interesting is that the repro won't hold open on empty when hand racking the slide!
Shot the forum recommended WWB, the also recommended PMC, then tried some "Blazer Brass" that a friend had given me. All 115gr FMJ. All worked fine, although I didn't send a lot of ammo downrange with this gun this time - I had an old .38 S&W that ate a bunch of my time. After sending 18 rounds downrange - said ammo was older than I am, and this revolver hadn't been fired in at least 45 years - its time this one is honorably retired to wall ornament duty.
Being more of a rifle guy than a handgun guy, I'm not the greatest shot with one. But I managed a couple of 2-1/2" groups at 7 yards. I can tell this Luger is deadly accurate.
Came home and cleaned it, where I found that (apparently) the light grease that someone had used on the firing pin had been partially converted to ash. I cleaned the FP and its "bore" thoroughly and oiled the assy, along with the rest of the pistol. Comments?
