I've read great reviews regarding this forum and thank you for having me as a member. I've armed myself with Kenyon's "Lugers at Random" and Hallock-Van de Kant's "The Mauser Parabellum", as well as a few Lugers!! Hope to learn more from advanced collectors. :cheers:

You've started out the right way. Invest in books. The knowledge will help you focus and make better judgements.

Gun book is important.

Mr. Schroeder summarized a list of gun collecting philosophies. The list is long, I cannot remember all. Three most important points I can remember now:

Whenever buy a gun, buy a gun book;
For investment, collect condition, for knowledge, collect whatever pertains;
Rare junk is still junk, when collecting for knowledge don't spend high for a marginal example.

I hope I heard of those at day 1. Could be useful, so I copied the words here.

Welcome, Maestro, from another new collector. I have "Lugers at Random" on order; but, in the meantime I purchased "The Luger Book" by John Walter based on a recommendation from a forum member. KW

There are several threads on book requests, I think one is saved.

Lugers at Random is very old, so is Jones and Datig, all are still good to get, but old.

Still's books are one of the most up to date, Hallock/Joops book is good, for more expensive, Sturguess and Goertz is good.

That is interesting...Who is reviewing this forum and where can we read the reviews??? :)

Good to have you aboard Darius, sounds like you are well on your way to a successful new venture in the world of Luger collecting. You will no doubt have lots of questions on this fascinating pistol so if you haven't already done so look up at the top of this page and you will see a "Search" button, you can enter just about anything relating to the Luger, weather it be any of the related accessories, books, solutions to possible problems, repairs, who to go to for any repairs you may not want to tackle yourself, also how to disassemble and reassemble your pistol, sources for needed parts, up to date values, etc. the list is nearly endless, and of course the knowledge that some of the members have on the Luger puts the rest of us to shame, you will find that they are very generous with sharing that hard earned knowledge.

I found my NEW Don R. Hallock & Joop van de Kant's "The Mauser Parabellum 1930-1946; Analysis of a Million Luger Pistols" #913/1090 Signed by both authors at http://www.gunshowbooks.com/cgi-bin/...e/st_main.html at a very reasonable price compared to Amazon, eBay, etc..

That's a gorgeous G date but the safety lever definitely looks like it has been restrawed.

Your 1939 looks like a 99% gun - is it refinished?

I use Still and Datig for books, I find them to be most helpful - Still is most accurate.

The previous owner buffed the safety unfortunately, so hopefully after a couple years or so, it should return back to its original patina.. the 39 is near mint; i had an advance collector check ALL 3 for refinish before i got them, & in fact couple of the lugers still had the whitish like powder underneath the grips when he took it apart.. I tried getting Still's book, but very very expensive!! perhaps i can add it to my wish list for x-mas :evilgrin:

Your phenolic "Black Widow" grips look very uneven on the inside. Is that simply heavy grease on them?
