Bernice Frankel (1922-2009) SSgt. USMC 1943-45 WW II. Enlisted and assigned as typist at Marine HQ in Wash DC, then air stations in VA and NC. Best remembered for her title role in the TV series “Maude” and as Dorothy in "Golden Girls".

I agree with you guys that the WW2 girls, or women behind the men from that generation had a beauty that was unique to just them! Maybe it was depression hard, or wartime tough, but they were beautiful inside and out!
During that time, the war years, In South Dakota, my father was a national guard staff sergeant and trained troops in small arms, most notably the Thompson, and my mother was part of the auxiliary that helped serve the soldiers, airmen and sailors food, donuts, sandwiches and such.. It was quite a feat as trains stopped there day and night from both coasts, they actually became somewhat inside famous for the pheasant sandwich which was there main claim to fame... My mother was a real sharp looking girl, and I bet she got hit on 10,000++ times... :).... But she was tough too!!! As twenty years later I occasionally felt her wrath...:eek:.... I really miss them now..as we all do our folks.. Best to all, til...lat'r....GT :cheers:

I couldn't connect the OP image with the Maude star and went looking on the web. I came across this photo. Maybe they are both Bernice Frankel, but I can see Dorothy from Maude in this one.

First photo was after a rough night at the NCO Club............:cheers: and she still looked edible. :thumbup:


But I believe your photo, in civvie-skivvies, was here first ID photo and the one I posted, in uniform was later.

Here's another heroine of mine. Sgt Lena Mae Basilone as she christens the destroyer named after her husband. She's not a great beauty (Although, I think so.) but her inner strength of character shines thtough. She and John only had 7 months together, but after he was killed on Iwo she never remarried. She died a few years ago, aged 85, I think.

Lord, those women were wonderful.

I don't have a photo of Martha Raye in uniform, but she was a full bird colonel Army reserve nurse and had no problem jumping in and helping with wounded soldiers when she was on a USO tour...a real trooper.

Poor Martha Rae, had a very sad ending. Lost both legs due to circulatory problems. I can't recall any woman who did more for our military in the 20th century.

The choice for your very own pinup during WWII was a hard one but after I saw this gal play the opposite of Gary Cooper as Mrs Alvin York (Gracie Williams), she won hands down.

She was an unknown when she was cast for that part and she was cast because of her age. For Sgt York to agree to the movie, he would be the one who picked who played him and his wife Gracie. Gary Cooper was a show on but Gracie was a problem. The actress had to be vice free, couldn't smoke, drink or had a run around reputation. For the producer to find her, they had to look outside the studio. I met Gracie Williams-York at Ft Campbell, Memorial Day, 1982.
