Flaming Bomb Marked Magazines
 

I am trying to find how many legitimate test magazines were actually produced and distributed. I'm not aware of fakes appearing. One per Test Luger can't be all! The number of holsters I read was 1000, one per gun. If 1000 only were made they should be more rare than the holsters as they are easily lost. ~~~Eric

I don't think the mags with the flaming bomb were only limited to test eagles. My 1900 AE ser number 18k range has a mag like this. I know the origins of this pistol and bought it from the original owner so the mag was there to begin with.

they are way easy to fake. start with an unnumbered wooden mag and add the little taurus-bull stamping. but most attempts are easy to spot as not looking old-enough.

The "flaming bomb" resembles the Taurus zodiac symbol, but it is not the same. The "flames" are not symmetric. Although the symbol that the DWM inspector chose to use is an ordnance bomb it has nothing to do with the US or any other ordnance operation. The marking was used widely on early DWM produced Lugers and magazines, not just the 1900 Test Trials pieces. Folks like to pair up flaming bomb magazines with the Test Lugers, but a plain unmarked wood base magazine is just as correct, perhaps even more so.

My 1900 AE is outside of the test luger range and it has the flaming bomb stamped on the inside of the frame and on the bottom of the upper receiver. But the magazine just has Germany stamped on the bottom.

Did the 1902 Fat Barrel Lugers have similar proofs?

There are a huge number of 'myths' that continue and will continue to be bantered about at gun shows and even old time collectors.

Since you brought this up Eric, lets see what I can think of;

Bomb is a Test luger symbol (as state above, no its a DWM marking)
ALL 1920 marked lugers are re-arsenaled
The 1920 shows that it was xxxxx
Most police guns are rearsenaled / made from parts
Nickle / chrome lugers were made for Navy use or more believable but false, were presentation guns

Sometimes the answer is not as important as the question! First year Law!!!!

My 1900 Swiss has the same marking in the well and as I recall in one other place.

Skeeter, The "Germany" marked mag bottoms, just indicate that these mags were imported into the USA separately (not as part of a pistol) as spares. TH
