RIAC Auction Jun 28-29-30 2013
I know, I said I would never bid on another RIAC auction...
...But there are *two* separate lots, each only two items, and they both have something I thought I'd never own again... ...And in my price range... So I put in one bid...maybe I'll put in the second... I'm not optimistic...But if lowball bids do succeed, maybe I'll feel lucky...Punk... |
It's possible to get good deal, as long as no one competing for it. The starting price is 50% of low estimate. If no one bid it at the starting price, they will lower the starting price immediately. Not bad.
Planned to play a little bit pocket watch, cheaper than playing guns.... not really, some PW is super expensive but I will start from low priced ones on ebay this time. Each domain has its specifics, one ebay seller posted "Don't ask the weight. It's listed as a collector piece". Never seen gun sellers post similar message :) |

I just opened their catalog. It arrived yesterday. Lot #3272 A is interesting. Claimed being a "Mauser Model 1896 Export Model Pistol". I just sold one, but Mauser in 9x25mm caliber is supposed being rare and I did not expect many "Export Model" appears on the market. Not many were made. How could we see "Export Model" one after another appearing on the market unstopping??
But this pistol's s/n is 4167, with 50-500 sight, and German military acceptance stamp. So it's not an Export Model, it's a regular 9x19mm Red 9 without "9" on the grip. The title is a little bit misleading. |
Lot 1465 B is also mislabeled. It's not a Mauser. It's a Taku Naval Dockyard. Interesting piece,,,,, I bet this lot will go relatively high.
|
I'm looking at 3175...It's not the best looking Butterfield percussion revolver, but the estimate is reasonable...It'll be interesting to see how much over the high estimate it sells for...
Edit: OK, I'm all in on three lots!!! I don't expect to win any of them, but if by some chance I do win all three, I'll have to max out two credit cards plus my savings account!!! No guts, no glory... :D |

Got this schedule from RIAC today -
Our auction begins Friday and starts each morning at 9:00 a.m. CST...The auction schedule is as follows: Friday, June 28th: Lots 1 -893 Saturday, June 29th: Lots 1000-1983 Sunday, June 30th: Lots 3000-3833 I don't have to work this year, so I'd like to monitor the auction - What site has real-time coverage of the RIAC auctions??? I think Alvin posted a site last year...Or two years ago... Edit: I bookmarked iCollector & ProxiBid sites; ArtFact doesn't list it...I'll figure it out... |
RIAC sessions can be viewed in real-time on multiple sites. The easiest one is http://www.icollector.com. No registration required in view-only mode.

page one is "Gone Live", page 18 is "Live Bidding" blinking buttons... Hit & miss to find current auction??? :( Hmmm...Pages in browser don't update automatically; have to refresh browser page to get currect auction...they sure don't last long..."Sold To Floor" seems most common detail of "Gone Live" auctions... |

"Floor" seems to get 99% of auctions...Top other bidder/winner is "kachina"...
20 seconds seems to be average auction time...By my egg timer... :) I don't have any bids in today's auctions...Anyone win anything yet??? Edit: There's a strange message..."[Lot] 388 is out of the auction"... Edit2: Lot 513 Luger 1900 American Eagle went for $1400...Lot 514 Portuguese 1906 Luger 7.65mm = $1400... 522 Two Broomhandles (M30 & Bolo) = $1200 537 G-43 rifle w/scope = $2750 553 Five shoulder stock holsters = $1500 754 Three semi-autos = $1000 - I was thinking of bidding on this auction...But I decided I couldn't afford to win four auctions... :D A 1917 Savage, a Remington 51, and a .35 cal S&W...I'd like to have all three...Someday... |
OK, Day Two commences!!!
Bit of a delay...Doesn't matter to me; I have one auction/bid in at the end of this session (last page of 20)... I won't know I've been outbid until about 6:00 o'clock... Realistically, after watching the live feed yesterday for about an hour and a half, there is no way an online bid on a 20 second auction can win...The floor can always outbid it...Too much time lag, even with your super-duper FiOS (or even fractional T1) connection... :( Only sure way to win is to bid $50,000 on a $2,000 item weeks beforehand... They're off!!! Looks like the big-buck items are first...$20,000 hammer price for a Henry rifle... 1775 WW II Singer M1911A1 = $35,000 1777 Colt 1902 Military = $3,000 1933 Gyrojet = $3,000 Well, the Second day of the auction is over...And I've received my first rejection notice... "Your Bids Were Unsucessful June 29, 2013 None of your bids were successful on items auctioned today. If you have bids in the remainder of the auction, you will be notified again. " One down, two to go... Edit: Day Three come & gone...None of my bids were successful... :crying: "None of your bids were successful on items auctioned today, but we would like to sincerely thank you for participating and helping us have a successful auction!" My bids, all of which were a couple hundred over the projected max, were at least a thousand under the hammer price... :( All were won by 'floor'...In fact, 'kachina' from Vernat Utah, must have won a couple hundred thousand worth of items...'Terrysands' from Ohio was close behind, and I only noticed two other winners...Everything else went to 'floor'...There must have been a mob on the 'floor'... All the items I was interested in, whether I bid or not, all went for what I would consider 'retail' prices...maybe a couple hundred more...Or a thousand more, in three cases... :p Not a place to find bargains...At least not for items you want... |
Spent two days in NYC, just back. Missed viewing the RIAC sessions. Currently, those "Newsstand" on NYC street side charges $13 for a pack of Marlboro.

I bet the cost is still no more than $1. All taxes. It's good to quit. I noticed lots of men and women smoking on the curbside in that city, contributing to NYC tax revenue.
Looks like those C96s sold not bad. Broomhandle Closet must be very busy these days :) |
$4.7 million total bought in the auction....
