I wish I had a dollar for every wood based magazine that was messed up by someone wanting to take it apart. First of all, the pin has been in that wood for many years...the wood is dry, the pin is probably somewhat rusted in place and what most folks don't take into consideration is that there is spring pressure on the base that needs to be eased before any attempt to remove or replace the base is made.

The only reason I can think of to thoroughly clean the inside of the magazine is if it was going to be used for shooting. This is also folly as there are much better modern magazines available to use that preclude possibly damaging an original magazine by loading it up and shooting.

Lastly, reassembling the magazine is no cakewalk. The aforementioned spring tension has to be overcome and getting the pin properly aligned and seated without splitting the wood or scarring the magazine tube is no easy task.

G.T. is the master at magazine repair and even he has special jigs and tools just for that purpose.

But to answer your question, yes, the small pin that holds the wood base on just drives out...chances of screwing it up are pretty high.
