Hmmm! I would say a picture may help in this matter. Go to your "Go Advanced" button on the bottom of the reply screen. Then go to manage attachments and up load from your computer to the forum.

Maybe this will help.

I merged your two threads.

You have an Erfurt made in 1918.

It is missing its side plate.

Looks like a decent old war horse he has there. Like Ed mentioned, it is missing the left side plate, a rather important part and numbered to the gun. Obviously the gun is made by the Erfurt Arsenal in 1918, 9mm, it looks all original and matching. With the correct original side plate it was probably worth $1000 to $1200, but as is maybe $700. Side plates can be found, but an original Erfurt plate with those 2 numbers is going to be tough. But any side plate should work and will give your friend a shooter.
Do the magazine numbers match the gun?

Your friend should check with his father to see if he has stored the sideplate separately, or if it never had it (many of the soldiers discarded the side plate when they were captured).

What was the reason for discarding the sideplates?

alanint 05-21-2013 12:40 PM

It made the captured pistol unusable.

Remember "Saving Private Ryan"? M1's that were marking graves had their trigger groups removed and pitched.
