Extractor - 1937 S/42
 

Hello Forum,

The extractor in my 1937 S/42 has a little "chip" missing on the right hand side. How serious (or not) is this situation? I was planning to shoot this gun in competitions (maybe 5 - 6) during this summer. Should I cancel those plans?:confused: Its a numbered original part on a completely number correct pistol... Anyone have a spare extractor numbered 51 for sale?!:) I apologize for LQ iPhone pics taken thru magnifier glass, thats all I got.

I would never shoot an all matching collectable pistol, but that is just me...

The extractor is one of the parts known for more frequent failure.

It also looks like there are some chips off of the tip of your firing pin.

Finally, I've never seen the bottom of the breech block drilled out that way. I suppose it is in an effort to prevent blown out primers from doing damage, but I'm not sure of what other impact that would have on the firing cycle.

The extractor is a precision shaped part. It's likely that the broken area will expand with usage.

I also agree that the firing pin and the breechblock , (the hole) have been messed with.

Simply buy a new extractor, any number, to compete with, if this is your plan.

It is a protection against pierced primers. The pressure can escape through that little hole, preventing more damage.

You see it quite often on pistols that served in Finland, if I remember correctly.

alanint, In what way do you mean the firing pin and breechblock is "messed with"? Im not sure I follow... Was this hole something that the gun was originally delivered with out of the factory, or was it a modification for the finnish market, or is it something made by an evil troll once it got to Finland?!

When the factory shipped the breech block, there was no hole drilled in it's bottom flat surface area.

I think that Doug agreed with me that the firing pin has been damaged at the tip. Either damaged, or someone modified it for some reason.

If that Luger were mine, and I was going to shoot it in competition, as you say that you plan to do, I would at least purchase another extractor(numbered or reproduction), and a fluted firing pin(numbered or reproduction) to use in this Luger. I might just find another complete toggle train and switch it out for the original. The parts most likely to break with shooting are in the toggle train.

I have broken two extractors(not numbered to my Luger) due to shooting it. I also replaced my numbered breecblock with a reproduction breechblock and a fluted firing pin.

These guns are old, and parts break......kinda like old humans!!

Listening to all of you I decided to order some replacement parts: extractor, firing pin, firing pin spring(?), main spring, hold-open latch w spring, sear spring. Please let me know if you think I missed something, thanks again for your opinions.

You might also want to pick up a couple of new Mec-Gar mags for your Luger.
