Cross hatching on luger grip

I just acquired a so called "Black widow " luger. This is BYF 42 gun with blued trigger and black bakelite grip panels. There is cross hatching cut into the back strap and front of the grip. Has anyone seen or heard of this type of enhancement to a luger? Has this ever been a factory operation?

Sounds like someone was doing some customization to that BW..never a factory operation.

Never heard of such a thing either. GI's were pretty creative in ways to customize their war souveniers, and I suspect this is such an instance.
But, as always, photos help.
