Importing a Luger From Canada
 

I've located a couple decent priced Lugers in Canada recently and was wondering if anyone has experience with importing to the US. I've found some info online but there's not a good complete source of info that I've found. I did find some info that a regular FFL holder can occasionally import, but I'm not sure if they can import a former military weapon. Also if a regular FFL dealer can import, what are the requirements for import marking? I know I could definitely go through an importer such as Simpson's, but this may get expensive. I've also read some info that there is a 10% import tax (maybe customs) on all firearms, and this is based on all the costs including shipping. How is this payment handled? If anybody has experience on importing Lugers I'd like to hear about it and what costs were involved.

Importing
 

The amendment to the 1968 GCA allows MILITARY weapons to be imported only if:


1...they are designated as a Curio and Relic

2...The importer has an 08 FFL [importer]


NON-military guns can be imported by anyone on an 'occasional' basis.


They all have to pass the 'point score' set up by BATF and most pocket pistols don't make it!


Someone else can tell you the current fees involved?

A friend of a friend is having the same problem. He has located a very desireable PPK in Candad at a good price, he is a FFL holder, but to bring it in requires that it go through an importer hence an import stamp which cuts value in half. The seller won't reduce what is a fair price and the buyer doesn't want an import. They have been talking for a while over this. No solution.

These guns are too small to pass the point score...and, the ATF will reject it--so tell your friend to give up!


That is why the PPK/S was invented! It needed the longer grip to be imported after the 1968 GCA!

If you qualify to import one on the "occasional basis" scenario, do you have to go into the garage and put your own import markings on it with your trusty chisel?
