single-digit or two-digit serials ...
'Any members have Lugers with single digit or double-digit serial numbers, of whatever sub-script ?
Did they by any chance use a preceding zero for 01, 02, 03 etc. up to 10, 11, 12, ... or just 1, 2, 3, .... 9, 10, 11 etc. ? I personally have a double-digit Luger in the l block, but don't think I have ever held another double-digit Luger, and never have seen a single-digit one, neither in person nor even in a photo. Although that is only about 1/10 of 1% , say of 1,500,000 conservative guesstimate made with the military-pattern serialization, that would be at least 1,400 examples made with a single-digit for a serial number. Enough for some to have survived with any luck, but I would think this constitutes a rarity in its own right, whatever other characteristics, garden-variety or otherwise. |
Hi Al, In answer to your question, a preceding zero was not used.
Regards, Norm |
ok, I didn't think so, but then with so few, ....
Thanks Norm, for the clarification. But the bigger question, has anyone got or seen a single-digit one ? |
Hi Al, As you rightly surmise, single digit Lugers are very uncommon. If you want to see a couple of single digit Imperial Navies, here you go: 1906 Navy #9, "The Navy Luger" by Görtz/Walter
1906 Navy #2b, "Imperial Lugers" by Still Regards, Norm |

Here are a couple of 2-digits:
Mauser P38 BYF 43 Police contract, number 62. Ernst Thälmann new VoPo, number 72. Hmm, I see a pattern :) |
The first nine Model 1900 Swiss Military had a serial number preceded by a zero. The very fist one, #01, was formerly in the collection of Henk Visser.

Because they started a new numbering each block of 10k, yes, lot More single digit than you think, and yes, I have seen sn 5' I own sn12 Simson, and have seen others.
