Halos on Germany Stamps
 

I found an older post which had a comment in it about a Germany stamp on an 1906 AE. This is a quote from post #10: "I have a BUG proofed '06 AE that is one of the most minty Lugers I own. It is #48710, Type V frame. The barrel markings have a halo but the GERMANY does not."

Anyone with a comment about Halos not being there on a Germany stamps? I do know that halos are normally there on most all guns! I know it is a red flag if they are not there. But I wonder are there any more exceptions like the gun mentioned above?

It is generally accepted that the GERMANY stamp on the frame front of the AE's in question do NOT have halos. It must have been stamped before blueing.

Hi Chris, Halos are a complex subject. If a pistol was marked before bluing, those marks will not show halos, if marks were applied after bluing, the halo effect should be visible. Since finishing and marking sequences varied model to model, and in some cases, year to year, you really need very specialized knowledge to determine what is correct. There is no "one size fits all" answer to your question.

Here is the real question: ws GERMANY stamped on the front of the frame by the factory before shipping, or by the importer before passing through customs? I don't know the answer, and I'd really like to.

As a complete newbie, I'd think that logic would dictate that GERMANY was stamped at the factory - as per the above discussion about halos and bluing. Be kind of hard for the importer to do it THEN blue the gun.

But my logic may be faulty - wouldn't be the first time! :banghead:

Dwight, being no stranger to things luger, brings up the big question that no one can answer for certain as there is no impeccable documentation. I've always wondered about the markings on the Stoeger imported lugers as well. In my humble opinion, I believe the GERMANY was stamped at the factory as the test lugers were not stamped. If the stamping was done in the U.S. perhaps the importing folks would have treated these test lugers just like other imported commercial lugers.

You are correct, the GERMANY is an export stamp, marked in country prior to exporting. Imported Lugers were not stamped in the U.S. with country of origin.

this is a photo of a 1906 type american eagle luger with serial number 25707. it is recorded on dwight grubers list of commercial lugers.

as is clear from this photo, the germany stamping does have halo.
