Black Widow?
 

Hi All
I was wondering what I should expect to pay for a Black Widow shooter and if anyone knows of a decent one available anywhere?

Seems like they bring a couple of hundred more than the earlier guns. Go figure... I'm guessing $1400 to $1800 for a matching gun in average or better shape.

After all these years, I still find it amusing to see that Ralph Shattucks old sales trick still works. A 'Black Widow' is nothing more than a P08 with plastic grips, guys. Nothing fancy.

Sorry, I should have been more descriptive...................i am looking for a byf 42 with period black grips. I apologize for the confusion

Back "in the day" "real collectors" turned up their noses at those last ditch Lugers.

Unit marks were also disdained.

There is a fine line between a hobby and a mental illness.

Not last ditch by any means! Replaced by the new P.38. But still a very effective and sought after WWII trophy by any American soldier at that time.

Ive got to say I don't remember 41, 42 Lugers ever being snubbed by collectors? Although, I've only been collecting for a short time in the Luger collector world.

Exactly. So, just get a mismatched, pitted or reblued standard P08 from WWII, give it a black finish, buy a pair of black plastic repro grips on e-bay, and you will have a shooter Black Widow.

The byf models were anything but "last ditch"... the finest Mauser Lugers ever produced IMNSHO... they may not have had strawed small parts, but they were made with the latest metallurgy of the time, and "Luger" precision. Those "plastic" (actually bakelite) grips command some very high prices from collectors... I would never turn up my nose to having one in my safe...

I can agree 100%. With the purchase of just one luger, made me sell my entire collection of other german and axis pistols.

I never heard such praise before. I purchased an almost new version a couple of years ago. It was produced near the end of the war. It is a nice one. I got a really good price. I just never knew that it was that precious??? O.K. by me.

Well Jack, while they may not be as "precious" as my wife of 47 years :) The 41 and 42 byf's are what I seem to be drawn to and now own several. I'll admitt that I am "new" to Luger collecting so I don't have any pre-conceived ideas of the "hyarchy" of the Luger hobby......................I like them all!! WWII is the center of my collecting interest however.

There really are no "Last Ditch" Lugers, as production was essentially terminated before the Reich reached that point. The Bakelite grips were a logistic expedient, since wood was a scarse and strategic material.

There is nothing second class about these pistols and they represent, for me, the most fascinating era of Luger production.

Nah, can't beat a nice strawed WW1 era luger or even better, a strawed Simson - before the Nazi time and made with love :)

I have never met a Luger that I didn't like........some I like more than others, but I like them all.
