1936 S/42 Mauser Luger -- thoughts?

Hi folks,

I'm not exactly new to Lugers, but I've never been able to collect them.

I owned a 1918 rework back in the early '90s and a "Black Widow" Mauser in the late 90s. I had to sell my last one for moving expenses out of California in 1999, and I've been wanting another Luger ever since. I really enjoy shooting them; nothing else points as well for me. That said, I was looking for a nice matching Luger that had already been reworked or rebarreled to use as a shooter. I found this one at Simpsons in Illinois and ordered it.

It's a 1936 S/42 Mauser billed as all-matching except for barrel and magazine; 90 percent bluing; 40 percent straw. Barrel looks like new inside; has what looks like FSE stamped up by the receiver end. Gun looks really nice ... internals are still in the white; bluing on receiver, toggle and frame looks like a rust blue. A good bit of the strawing remains.I noticed the toggle pin actually has a 96 stamped on it rather than 69 like the rest of the gun.

What can y'all tell me about it? (Slew of photos follows)

It looks a lot better in person than on their website -- I was pleasantly surprised. Any thoughts on what sort of replacement barrel I have?

The replacement barrel on the last Luger I owned just had a little eagle stamp up by the receiver, not these letters -- FSE. I'm really happy with the gun. :)

Looks like a nice one. Welcome back into the fold.

Interesting that an otherwise matching gun in this original, excellent overall condition would have been rebarreled.

Yeah, I thought that odd as well. The barrel's finish is not quite the same as the rest of the pistol either, so I think whoever did it just removed the old barrel and installed this one, with no refinishing. There's no "Made in Germany" anywhere on the barrel, just those three characters down near the receiver. The rest of the pistol is in awesome condition -- everything is very clean.
