8th Air Force Museum - Savannah GA.

I have been working in Savannah, GA. this past week and the next couple of weeks. Today I actually had the day off, so I figured I would check out the Mighty 8th Air Force museum here and see what they had.

My favorite items that they had dispalyed were the old bombers jackets with the logos for each bomber group on the back. They also had a B-52, P-51 mustang and a german fighter on display there. It kinda surprised me just how small the B-52 was. Seeing the areas where a gunner would sit were really small, especially the tail gunner. I would have thought that the plane was somewhat bigger. A whole new respect for them guys that flew in these plans and fought the enemy. My hats off to them.

I attached a few photos of the museum so everyone can see whats in the museum and enjoy some of the history behind the 8th Air force.

Enjoy!

I love that museum. I was down there this past July with my daughter. A very good museum and research library. I had the pleasure of meeting a crew member of a PT squadron stationed in the South Pacific. He and his wife were touring the museum and both were a pleasure to talk to.

I am a little puzzled though. I don't remember a B-52 on the grounds. If you don't mind my asking, where was it at? Also, do you have any pictures of it?

I think you were thinking about the jet bomber B-52 but was referring to the B-17 Flying Fortress, right?
It seems a nice museum with great displays. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for posting the great pictures of this super museum.

Had the opportunity to visit a few years ago. Remember vividly how during viewing one display a great gust of wind his us. This was to replicate the opening of the bombay doors and the gust of wind that went thru the entire bomber. Everyone in the crew knew when the doors opened! Thought this was in interesting effect and a very memorable one.

The Eighth Air Force certainly earned their excellent reputation. Stephen Ambrose stated in his book, The Wild Blue, that the B-24 crews alone experienced over 50% casualties.

I do apologize. It was a B-17. My bad on that.

Great Pictures there Skeeter..................I'll have to make a trip down there sometime..........crazy thing is I have a Humber bicyle very similar to that one in your picture but it is a ladies model. It belongs to my wife and was given to her as a birthday gift in the early 50's and she has kept it all these years.
