These two old 1917's represent what i think are fine specimens of what i call Horse pistols.

Although I'm biased to the S&W (which was used by the Brazilian Army), both are real classics.
Nice pair Padre.

Two of my favorite handguns. Add a Webley Mk.VI that shoots the same .45 ACP target loads and you have a truly wonderful range day.

Very nice pair!

I thought about the S&W M1917 also but with the other pistols I want to get I needed to pick one so that's why I went for the Colt.

What i know of the colt, it seems to be fired or carried very little , was well oiled and kept wrapped up, i have fired it a few times . I i am told was the property of my grandfather 's brother , james thomas who lost his leg in world war one and was know as "peg leg Jim ", i guess now adays that would not be socialy correct/lol. The smith an wesson was carried by my grandfather , Wiiliam J "Will" thomas, as you can see it has alot more use , some where down the road it was rebarreled , the barell is only marked LNA on the the right side and S&w 45 on the left, and it does not work with the half moon clips, the cyclinder will not turn, you have to just put the rounds in and poke them out, been meaning for years to work on that and havnt got around to it, just a bit of family providence of the two, it seems most of the family guns one way or the other have come to me, beining left to me or i bought them from other families members . I once remember my wise old grandfather looking at me from under the brim of his stetson hat , hand resting on his revolver, and half smiling at me, you boy will be the "keeper of the flame" , i guess he was right. Thanks Padre

I found out today that the smith an wesson 1917 will work fine with the full moon clips. I guess the others that work in the colt are a bit thicker, learn something new everyday.

thought while i had the smith apart to clean it i would tune it a bit and smooth the action, i then found a wide older target trigger which i will install, the barrel was replaced , might as well turn it into a good shooter.

The same Moon Clips should fit the S&W and Colt 1917s, as well as a Webley MkVI.
