A good Broomhandle forum?
 

Just picked up a broomhandle mauser today. The broomhandle and P08 has been two guns on my bucket list. With all the panic buying for assault rifles out there. I posted a wasr10 ak that I picked up in trade a few years ago. What I got was a mixmatched C96. the lower reciever is in the 11XXX range the upper is 508xxx range on the serial numbers. The rest of the numbers dont match each other or the frames. the hammer doesnt have the NS and its got a importers stamp IA CO SAC CA
The I could be a T and on the other side it has its got germany stamped on it (right side) with 7.63 stamped in real small numbers. Its pretty obvious its been reblued and polished before. I did read up on checking the bolt stop and it looks to be fine. The barrel has been bored out to 9mm and since I dont have anything to check the diameter. I did the bullet test by sticking a 9mm in the end of the barrel and it doesnt go all the way in. I know thats not the correct way to check but at least the bullet didnt completely fall into the barrel.
So is there a decent mauser forum like this for lugers?

There used to bve a nice one, but the site owner seems to have abandoned it and it has become a spam trap. I don't know of any decent Broom sites out there.

Yahoo C96 Forum has many members, and some members have extensive hand-on experience on how to make a C96 work.

Semi-auto "assault rifle" is hot these days. Way hotter than C96 and Luger. My selling ad on a scarce Flatside C96 has only accumulated fewer tan 200 views in more than one month, but my ad on a Ruger Mini-14 Folder attracted almost 500 views in two days! I had to drop the Ruger ad though -- the more I look at this one, the more I feel it's "rare" now. Never had that feeling in the past. And I will invest a rifle bag to store it.

There are quite a few aks advertised locally. Wasrs in the 950-1300male dollar range but the same ad keeps appearing so obviously nobdy is that crazy here. I posted a low cap wasr with mags for 700 but never got a call.
Like some people here with the lugers ive got six differend aks so i decided to let one go in trade. I still have two more kits a romainian and a egyptian maadi plus a psl kit. If I had any financial sense i shoild sell all the assault style guns while the panic is still going but i didnt collect these guns over the years to profit, i actually a bought them for myself to enjoy and hopefully pass them to the kid someday (who will probably sell them ) jim

AR were hitting $3,600 last week on Gunbroker!! Most people, however, seem to be taking a "wait and see". Regarless of what passes, there will still be a cut-off date for grandfathered guns, if it comes to that. THAT'S when it will truly hit the fan, as in '94.

I once read a post from Gerben, stating that he was going to back-up the technical portion of Nemo's old site and make it available. I printed out ALL the tech info there BEFORE Nemo went AWOL, it IS worth having.

The C96 Yahoo group is good, although the Yahoo "Group" format is not as easy to navigate as this fine forum.
Do you plan on shooting your broomhandle? Let us know how is works out. I enjoy shooting mine, it's a great companion to the PO8. Mine is mismached also, and I had to play with and get some other pieces before it worked perfectly. Lots of hand fitted parts I think.

Im hoping to shoot it next time I go plinking. The guy I got it from told me he did fire it, gave me a couple stripper clips with some ammo still on it, but the ammo looks like it sat in the bottom of a drawer and got wet because its got some corrosion on it. They will be tossed. I'll look up your broomhandle. jim

has anyone here tried the chinese stocks sets for these broomhandles? I see them on ebay for 66 bucks with the sling and holster. jim

I think the cheap broomhandle stock sets on Ebay are for the "Airsoft" toy broomhandles.

I know some of the "airsoft" stuff is actual gun parts. Their was a discussion on one of the akforims about a muzzlebrake. The airsoft brake was less than 20 dollars and when compared to the real deal it was identical. They point was some companies were taking surplus part that were banned from some countries like norinco of china and labeling it airsoft it now becomes a toy. I wonder how these lockup on a broomhandle stock.

I posted this on gunco.net and kernelrink over there who is really knowledgeable on the ins and outs of the batf rules and regs posted a link about reproduction stock is still taboo on a mauser, its suppose to be a original stock. I personally dont want to get into a discussion about a reproduction stock vs a original stock with any batf agent at the gun range. So I think Im going to just forget the whole adding a stock to the pistol jim

Given the condition of this gun, it must have spent its serviceable life somewhere in Asia, and the recent U.S. importer's stamp on right side of the grip frame matches that guesstimation. But why it also has a "GERMANY" stamp on the left side....God knows... probably German changed its exporting route in 1920s. Numerous used full size small rings were exported to Asia in that era. The lock frame came from a postwar Bolo, but fits the frame OK, probably mixed by a local gunsmith before exporting to the U.S. This instance must be dangerous to shoot.

I heard that Broomhandle was relatively rare in the U.S. before 1980. In 1980s, China bulk exported numerous Broomhandles to the U.S for exchange of U.S. currency. All of them has U.S. importers' stamps. Since then, Broomhandles, especially small ring hammer variations, have become a common gun in the U.S.

The most interesting one was "45 ACP Shansei". Not many were made in 1920s, and it's supposed to be rare. But nowadays, we see at least one instance a week for sale on the market. In similar condition, asking price varies from $800 to $3500.

Alvin, could you tell me as a novice anything from these pictures? I didnt realize there were different models etc. small ring, cone, Bolo I thought was a shorter barreled broomhandle. small grip? If anyone could just school me on the different parts on this pistol I would appreciate it. I'll probably join the c96 yahoo site later. Thanks to all. jim
